God deals with the topic of pride and humility quite a bit in a number of different verses. He wants us to think well of ourselves, but not too highly of ourselves. They don’t see their own downsides and they amplify their upsides. It’s a picture of self-deception. In reality, the only way you can begin to become something is to admit that you’re nothing.
Matthew 23:12: “And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.” There is a self-limiter of sorts in place. A prideful person, given enough time, will eventually run into a brick wall. He will eventually come to a place where the truth that He is not enough is on full display. Whether He comes to understand that, or not, is up to Him. He may resemble that brick wall he just ran into—stubborn and immovable.
1 Peter 5:6: “Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:” The answer to stem the tide of pride is for us to humble ourselves before God. For this truly gives us an accurate picture of things. We can truly see Him as He is, and we can truly see ourselves as we are. There’s even an added benefit to this. He will promote us when we are ready. When we act in lowering ourselves, we are in the best position to be lifted up.
James 4:6: “But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.” Another upside to all this humility is that He extends grace to us. With the humility, I think, comes the understanding that we need grace. We need grace because our flaws are many.
