…Let’s go deeper—Playtime for adults

Those things we do as a profession shouldn’t just feel like work. They should be enjoyable. The things we do for a career are a part of our calling. We can’t actually do whatever we want. But we do those things where we can use our gifts and talents.

Colossians 3:23: “And whatsoever ye do, do [it] heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;” In whatever profession we choose, the important thing is that our work be dedicated to the Lord. We all have our areas of expertise, and we have an opportunity to impact those lives around us in that field of endeavor. As we ‘go into all the world’, we go into every man’s world. That’s part of the world we are chosen to impact.

Ecclesiastes 3:12-13: “I know that [there is] no good in them, but for [a man] to rejoice, and to do good in his life. And also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy the good of all his labour, it [is] the gift of God.” I believe God wants us to enjoy our labor. It’s not meant to be drudgery. It’s supposed to have an enjoyable aspect to it. And we not only enjoy the labor, but the fruits of it.

Proverbs 22:29: “Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean [men].” Our diligence in our work is something that generally encourages promotion. We see these things in the lives of Biblical figures like David and Joseph. They were steadfast and diligent in whatever level they were at. This didn’t go unnoticed by their superiors. The promotion it brought them was something they didn’t have to fight for. It was an automatic result of them being diligent every day.

Psalms 16:11: “Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence [is] fulness of joy; at thy right hand [there are] pleasures for evermore.” Our life was meant to be enjoyable. God wants us to enjoy all aspects of it, which includes our careers. We can be joyful on a daily basis. In fact, we do our best work when we are joyful. We should have a job that we love. And we don’t have to feel guilty if our life feels like ‘playtime for adults’.
