The ‘platform’ we have can vary by degree in importance. And they can vary depending on the situation we’re in. But I think it’s wise for us to be always be mindful, and have situational awareness, of where and how we can influence people.
Proverbs 13:20: “He that walketh with wise [men] shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.” We need to not only be mindful of our influence of others, but also their influence of us. We can be the positive influence we’ve always wanted to be, but someone might come along that starts to bring us down. Now, our influence isn’t what it once was because of someone else’s influence on us. It can be a balancing act. But we need to be mindful that we’re influencing them and not vice versa. If they are impacting us this way, then we may need to just protect ourselves.
Proverbs 15:1: “A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.” It’s best to lead with words of kindness rather than contention from the get-go. If things come to blows, you could always go there if you had to. But that would be your last resort. You can’t always come to an agreement with people. If that happens, then you may have to just back off. Sometimes you have to agree to disagree.
Galatians 6:2: “Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.” Another platform of influence we have is in just helping a fellow traveler who needs help. Actually, this can be some of the most powerful influence we can have on someone else. People don’t always care what you have to say. But they most likely care what you do. And they can’t argue with what your actions on a daily basis.
Proverbs 27:17: “Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.” Some other influences we have on others just involves making each other better. We can sharpen each other’s ideas in just discussing things. And sometimes we can help someone else improve in the rare case we need to confront them about their behavior. But it’s an equal give-and-take. They listen to you because they respect you, and you listen to them for the same reasons.
Matthew 5:41: “And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain.” The Bible compels us to do even more than is asked for, or more than is even necessary. This is something that not only fulfills the law, but it displays the overwhelming love of God. We can reflect that love to others. He wants our actions to be a reflection of Him. And we can be this reflection when we use our ‘platform’ in the right way.
