I think in going deeper with God, it doesn’t just happen either. We need to build up to a point where we can go deeper with God. Part of that means we increase our knowledge and understanding. And the rest of that involves building a closer personal relationship with Him. Some things we can just go and do. But some things God won’t give us to do until we’re prepared.
Luke 5:4: “Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught.” Jesus wanted them to go out into the deeper water. Why? Because this is where the fish were. But I think it was also symbolic. The true riches, the true rewards, and the true relationship is found when we go out into the deep waters with Him. We find the real value in Him and in our friendship when we go a little deeper.
Psalms 32:9: “Be ye not as the horse, [or] as the mule, [which] have no understanding: whose mouth must be held in with bit and bridle, lest they come near unto thee.” Sometimes we are hesitant and resisting of where God is leading us. It can be out of fear, anxiety, or just plain unwillingness. But we have to remember that God won’t lead us anywhere that He won’t go with us. He won’t ask us to do something without empowering us to do it. And He won’t release us into the work without preparing us.
James 4:7: “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” The first act in going deeper is our full submission to God. This not only prepares us to go deeper, but gives us the power to resist the enemy. We may not know what all lies ahead, but we can be sure that it’s better than what lies behind.
Proverbs 24:27: “Prepare thy work without, and make it fit for thyself in the field; and afterwards build thine house.” This is a solid verse on preparation. You can’t build a house if you don’t have the income to do so. That’s why you have to have a foundation from which to prepare. If it involves school, then you have to have a way to pay for it. You can then begin to build your (house) when you are able to support it.
1 Peter 1:13: “Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;” Preparation also means having a readiness of mind. We don’t have to know it all, but we do need to have a solid base of knowledge. We do need natural understanding, but we also need spiritual understanding. Those things we know in the natural can take us a long way. But when we come to a point of something we can’t answer, God can give us a deeper understanding and point us in the right direction.
