…Let’s go deeper—Fear isn’t what you think it is

The difficult thing about living a life governed by faith is that you can’t always physically see where you’re going. But that’s a part of what faith is—not going by what you see. But what you don’t see with your physical eyes you can see with the eyes of faith. You can develop a spiritual vision that directs your life. It’s a life directed by God, and His Word.

Isaiah 41:10: “Fear thou not; for I [am] with thee: be not dismayed; for I [am] thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.” This has become one of my favorite verses on fear. I can quote this one on command. The command to ‘not fear’ is repeated multiple times in verses throughout the Bible. This is just one of those verses. But along with the command to ‘not fear’ is also the command to trust Him. And that pleading by God for us to trust Him is always preceded with a command to ‘not fear’ because our trust is fully in Him only when we have left the fear behind.

2 Timothy 1:7: “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” Of all the attributes God has granted us, as believers, fear is not one of them. So, we can know that it’s not from Him. It’s funny that one of the characteristics He has given us here is a sound mind. I think that’s because it’s the opposite of fear. Because when you’re in fear, you’re not of a sound mind. You’re frantic, and not thinking clearly, and letting your mind run away with you. It’s something like being crazy. That’s not what God has for us. He has a better way that includes a sound mind when we trust in Him.

1 Peter 5:7: “Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.” For those things we do fear, God tells us what to do with them. He tells us to give them to Him. The idea behind casting is you throw it and forget about it. That’s what we do in prayer. Part of our prayers involve casting those things onto Him. But along with that right to cast it onto Him, we forfeit the right to continue to carry it. Naturally, if He’s got it, then we don’t. It can’t be both ways.

1 Corinthians 2:5: “That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.” Sometimes our fear can be rooted in the fact that we are listening to too many people. And much of what they’re saying is fear mongering. And there’s a distinct difference between listening to man’s wisdom—which can sound convincing at times—and listening to God’s wisdom.

Psalms 32:8: “I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.” If we’re going to give up fear’s governorship over our lives, then it means we are going to have to allow someone else to lead. That means God has to take over. If we can be convinced to let go of the fear, God has a much better way for us. His way includes His promise to guide us, and teach us, and be led in the path that of life. He promises to not only lead us, but also go with us through it all. Look to Him. The things is, you find out that the more you do, the less fearful you will be.
