The notion that science and religion have to be at odds is something of a misconception. They can actually mesh perfectly well—real science, that is. But I think this is an idea that some with a certain worldview would like to convince us of. Because if they can convince the world that people of faith are anti-science they can also convince the world that they are way out in left field and aren’t to be taken seriously. But being a person of faith means that the things that you can’t explain you take by faith. And that is what is at the heart of the Christian message.
Genesis 1:1: “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” Of course, it all starts right here in Genesis, first Chapter, first verse. How did He create it? I don’t know. All I know is that He did. And it doesn’t really matter how He did it. It just matters that He did. Maybe someday we will understand it all. But for now we take it by faith.
Romans 1:20: “For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, [even] his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:” The great thing about creation is that God has revealed Himself through it. It shows us something of the nature and characteristics of God. The paramount truth of this verse is expressed in it stating, ‘…so that they are without excuse.’ This means that those who try to explain away the process of creation, and His overseeing of it, have no excuse for their lack of understanding. God has given them enough evidence to believe in Him by His creation alone.
Hebrews 1:10: “And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands:” What God started with was foundational to the rest of what He built. This recognition can actually be a starting point in coming to God. For when you truly come to this realization—that this all couldn’t have happened by itself, that it’s not just random chance, and that since it has a design it must have a designer—you come to realize another fundamental truth: That it all has a purpose and, ultimately, so do you.
Psalms 19:1: <
Psalms 139:14: “I will praise thee; for I am fearfully [and] wonderfully made: marvellous [are] thy works; and [that] my soul knoweth right well.” Ultimately, God has revealed Himself through us. We are the pinnacle of His creation. Here, by describing the care and concern He took in creating us, it also describes the value He has placed on us. Since we know our value, we can also know that we aren’t just here by random chance. We can know that if we were created, we were also created for a purpose.
