…Let’s go deeper—No Complaining

One thing I try to remind myself of in the midst of frustrating experiences are other frustrating experiences I’ve had in the past. I think about the times I’ve complained and I remember that it didn’t help to change anything. I was just feeding my own frustration. But God has a better way for us. It’s one where we rise above these things. It’s one where we don’t get caught up in the trivial morass of this world. It’s one where our minds are at peace because we keep our minds on Him.

Philippians 2:14: “Do all things without murmurings and disputings:” This isn’t just a suggestion; it’s what God is calling us to. We all have things we have to do that we don’t enjoy. But we have to remember to do them with a thankful heart. Murmuring and complaining really just shows ungratefulness. And what it does the most is hold us back. God knows that we can’t progress beyond where we are as long as we are complaining about where we are.

Psalms 106:25: “But murmured in their tents, [and] hearkened not unto the voice of the LORD.” This describes the Israelites in the wilderness. If there’s ever an example not to follow, this would be it. They were an example of people who couldn’t progress because they were too busy complaining about their situation. And many of them stayed in that situation because they couldn’t change their attitude. They spent forty years in the wilderness because they kept doing the same thing over and over again. It’s a great lesson for us today.

1Thessalonians 5:18: “In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” Though God doesn’t calls us to give thanks ‘for’ everything: He does call us to give thanks ‘in’ everything. Praise and thanksgiving provide a kind of momentum that continually propel us forward. If you’re in a tough situation, just start praising Him and keep doing what you know you need to do. Before you know it you’ll break through and be on the other side.

Isaiah 26:3: “Thou wilt keep [him] in perfect peace, [whose] mind [is] stayed [on thee]: because he trusteth in thee.” This verse is often applied in times when we are fearful and don’t know what to do, but I believe it’s also applicable in those times of just pure frustration. When we find ourselves getting near the boiling point, it’s best to just calm ourselves and get refocused on God—on the things that really matter. This can help bring us back to an equilibrium. Our frustration goes away because we’ve gotten our minds off the problem and gotten them back onto Him.

Psalms 34:1: “I will bless the LORD at all times: his praise [shall] continually [be] in my mouth.” This attitude of praise can become a habit if you allow it. If you get into that area of a heart filled with praise you have a different mindset. You don’t have such a problem-oriented mind because you’re so aware of the one who has the solutions. Those things that seemed so big and insurmountable before become minor and small because you know the one who is bigger than it all.
