It’s just a coincidence—Really?

What some quickly label as coincidence is too easily dismissed as just that. We overestimate our own importance when we so easily undermine the intervention of God. Those acts of God steering us back on the right track aren’t usually ‘thunder and lightning’ kinds of moments. They’re often subtle inputs by Him, to not only help us along the way, but also make His presence known. Even when we don’t feel like it, He is always there. And even though some may fail to acknowledge it, He is always there.

Exodus 33:15: “And he said unto him, If thy presence go not [with me], carry us not up hence.” Moses knew that they couldn’t make it without God. He was keenly aware of His and the Israelites’ need for God. They were in the wilderness and he knew that if they went without God they might as well not go. God was the one who had gotten them that far and God was the only one who could carry them the rest of the way.

Romans 8:26: “Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.” God not only helps us in everyday areas of life, but He even helps us to pray through His Holy Spirit. If we were honest, we would have to admit that we don’t always know how to pray for a certain situation. This is where the Holy Spirit helps us to pray in a new way that pours our heart out to God.

Matthew 6:28: “And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:” This reminder from Jesus was a reminder not to worry about how we are going to be clothed or what we will eat. He compares it to the lilies—even they don’t worry about these things. And even their care isn’t a coincidence. It’s a natural process God has set up for them. The same with us. When our source runs dry we don’t look for a new source. We look to the same source: Him. Our source doesn’t change even though the means may.

Romans 8:31: “What shall we then say to these things? If God [be] for us, who [can be] against us?” Those interventions by God often come at the moments we need them the most. But they do come—if we wait, and are patient, and trusting in Him. We learn that he’s faithful and trustworthy. This is the confidence God wants us to express in Him. It’s a confidence not based in knowing that chance is in your favor, but that He is. This confidence dispels our fear, helps us do things we otherwise couldn’t, and keeps Him in the preeminent place in our hearts.

1 Samuel 17:37: “David said moreover, The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the LORD be with thee.” Why did David have confidence in God? Because of past experience. Why did David believe He could defeat Goliath? Because he didn’t believe in coincidences. Coincidences are those things non-believers believe in. Anything they can’t ascribe to a natural explanation gets ascribed to ‘coincidence’. But not God’s people. We know those interventions on our behalf that we can’t explain have a supernatural origin—God. He’s the God of the supernatural—the ‘exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think’ God.
