This anticipation of what’s to come is something that I believe God wants us to instill in us. He doesn’t want us to dwell on reflection of what’s been, or live in complacency of what is, but in excitement and anticipation of what’s to come.

Isaiah 9:6: “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” This verse is a prophecy foretelling the birth of Jesus. It’s a common verse repeated during the Christmas season. It was a revelation of His appearing in the future. It was also the hope on whom the believers in the Old Testament placed their faith. They were looking forward to what was ahead, not back towards what had been.
Revelation 21:4: “And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.” For those in Christ, this is the ultimate anticipation. The hope we have waiting us in Heaven is what we are really looking towards. While we can try to envision it, I know we can’t truly do it justice. Those things that cause us pain and sorrow here will be a distant memory in this place. Those things that ultimately bring us joy will be fully realized here—seeing Jesus face-to-face, loved ones who passed on before, and our reward in Heaven.
Galatians 6:9: “And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.” Even though the prize at the end is great, our tendency to look at the discomfort and pain in front of us can be overwhelming at times. We have to remember that those things that discourage us pale in comparison to the great things God has in store as we continue on in Him. When we cling to our goal by faith we will see it manifest in our future.
Philippians 4:4: “Rejoice in the Lord alway: [and] again I say, Rejoice.” This cannot be forgotten. Our attitude of praise continuously keeps us in the right mindset. It not only keeps our mind off our problem, but it keeps our mind on Him. For He is the solution to our problem anyway. It’s repeated twice here. Maybe we just needed the reminder. Or maybe Paul was just that excited, and wanted everyone to know he was anxiously anticipating his future.
