…Let’s go deeper—Labels can be bad; definitions aren’t

What we all need to understand is that there are certain standards by which to live. They weren’t set up by me, or by you, but were declared by God. These aren’t things that we can morph into standards of our own liking. God made them so that we could have a relationship with Him, and live a good life in Him.

Isaiah 5:20: “Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!” This seems to be where we’re at today. Much of what used to be evil is now called good, and much of what used to be good is now called evil. Any distinctive lines have now become blurred so that no one is quite sure where the lines are anymore. But this is what happens when you begin to make your own rules. You think you can find your own way in the darkness and, before you know it, you’re groping around in it without a light to guide you through it. This is confusion. And unfortunately many people end up confused without even realizing that they are.

Ecclesiastes 12:13: “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this [is] the whole [duty] of man.” We were not just created, but created for a purpose. And our purpose fits within certain parameters. God made those parameters. This verse simplifies our purpose and meaning in life. And it starts with fearing God. This is a wise place to start. It recognizes your limits as a human being and it opens you to God for His help and assistance. With humility comes an understanding of how little you know and an even better understanding how much God does know.

Deuteronomy 6:13: “Thou shalt fear the LORD thy God, and serve him, and shalt swear by his name.” Our purpose isn’t just to fear God, but along with that comes serving Him as well. When we look to Him He will begin to guide and direct us for the individual purpose He has for us. There is something for each of us to do. When we do that, we are being the best reflection of Him that we can be.

1 John 1:8: “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.” Often in the process of labeling, we end up labeling ourselves incorrectly. There’s a tendency we all have to duck blame or cast it onto someone else. This is the case here. We would all like to think we are free from sin, but this declares that we aren’t. We know that all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. This is a universal truth. For however we might try to label ourselves, we can’t begin to duck the reality of this definition. This definition doesn’t change until we acknowledge that it’s true.

John 8:36: “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.” For those who have come to an understanding of their desperate situation without Him, this option becomes available. With the recognition of our own bondage in sin we can now be made free. It’s through repentance and acceptance of the sacrifice Christ made on the cross for us. Then we fit a new definition—a definition of freedom and righteousness. That old you has passed away and all things have been made new. We are now not just labeled, but declared—defined even—that we might now become the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus.
