What God wants us to know about Him, He doesn’t want us to know while we are in denial of ourselves—who we truly are. He has shown us who we are without Him, but He has also shown us who we can become in Him. Those possibilities are available to us all. But the journey starts with listening to God and what He has shown us about us and our own natures.
Matthew 15:8: “This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with [their] lips; but their heart is far from me.” What God is looking for from us is sincerity. And what we sometimes miss is the mark of sincerity. The people that Jesus spoke most harshly against were the scribes and Pharisees—the ones who were the most hypocritical. But Jesus had compassion on the truly penitent. He wanted to help those who needed help the most—the ones who wanted, and recognized they needed help the most.
James 3:11: “Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet [water] and bitter?” Sometimes our speech betrays us. We say things that contradict what we represent or who we say we truly are. This doesn’t mean we give up and stop aspiring to do better, but it means we change what is so glaringly wrong in us through the help of the Holy Spirit. Sometimes the change isn’t as difficult as we make it out to be. It’s just a matter of allowing the nature of our new birth to come out.
James 1:8: “A double minded man [is] unstable in all his ways.” Again, our double-ness of mind is related to our double-ness of purpose. We don’t readily recognize that the nature we have in Christ has to be given the authority to work by us. While our flesh will always be our enemy in this life, we yield to the work of the Spirit by the act of our will. Yield to the desire of your regenerate heart. Remember, you and God are a majority. And with Him, you can win this fight.
2 Corinthians 7:10: “For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.” Our true repentance over a full realization of our sinful state is not something to run from. It’s something to run to. We shrink back in fear over coming to a realization of these things. But don’t let the fear keep you from the glorious end result.
2 Corinthians 7:11: “For behold this selfsame thing, that ye sorrowed after a godly sort, what carefulness it wrought in you, yea, [what] clearing of yourselves, yea, [what] indignation, yea, [what] fear, yea, [what] vehement desire, yea, [what] zeal, yea, [what] revenge! In all [things] ye have approved yourselves to be clear in this matter.” The continuation of the preceding verse is concluded here. This result of our true repentance in Him—-look at what it brings about. Wipe those tears from your eyes. Take a look and see. If you can look for but a minute, the Godly fear, desire for right living, a zeal for God, a heart to pursue God, and a heart clear of guilt and shame come to the forefront on this journey. What contradictions that remain, now, are brought into subjection to this new singleness of mind and purpose.
