…Let’s go deeper—One of these things does not belong

This concept of eliminating what doesn’t belong even carries over into my spiritual life. It helps me to discover what belongs where, and what doesn’t. As elementary as these ideas are, we can still apply this wisdom to our everyday lives.

Matthew 7:16: “Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?” We can discover the reality of someone’s own beliefs by looking at the fruit they bear. Some are bearing great spiritual fruit, while others aren’t. Some are living what they say they believe on a daily basis. You can see its evidence in how they act and respond. You can see it even more clearly when you witness them do something that they clearly wouldn’t have had to do, and it’s just an outflow of their heart.

James 3:11: “Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet [water] and bitter?” Sometimes our speech can betray us. We might make remarks or comments that aren’t in line with a renewed and regenerate spirit. Words are so impactful. And if we aren’t cognizant of the impact our words can make, we can say some things we shouldn’t. I think the best way to avoid this is to think about what kind of fountain we want to be. Do we want to be a sweet fountain to others, or like that bitter fountain?

2 Corinthians 6:17: “Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean [thing]; and I will receive you,” One thing God has called His children to be is clean. That means we have to separate ourselves from some things in this world that are unclean. The purity of our live is what helps keep our communication lines open with God. It’s also what places us in the best position for God to bless us and guide us.

John 15:19: “If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.” We can often feel as though we don’t belong in this world. That’s because we don’t really. We are really living in a foreign land. That can make us feel lonely and dejected. But it’s not something to really feel down about. This verse tells us why we feel like we don’t belong. It’s because we’re just travelling through. It’s because God has chosen out of this world.

Psalms 100:3: “Know ye that the LORD he [is] God: [it is] he [that] hath made us, and not we ourselves; [we are] his people, and the sheep of his pasture.” As believers, we have to remember not only where we don’t belong, but who we belong to. We have to remember that we belong to God. We may have to endure the rejection of others, but on the other side of that we receive the acceptance of God. In this case being eliminated from the world isn’t a bad thing, but a good thing.
