…Let’s go deeper—Art and Science

When I think about God, I see Him as the greatest architect of all time. His designs are really art and science—but also so much more. In God’s relating to us, He doesn’t do it in just one singular way, but He does it in a multitude of ways. He does it in a number of different ways because we are a combination of these different aspects. And His relation to us is meant to be like his creation: He wants it to be a complete work.

Genesis 1:31: “And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, [it was] very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.” God’s creation was something He reviewed after He had finished. He looked at it and called it good. The Bible also says ‘without Him was not anything made that was made’. God made it all. His creation of the earth was both an art and a science. For truly when He created the universe He also became the creator of art and science.

Luke 10:27: “And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.” In our adoration and love for God, He also asks us to love Him with our whole being. That means we love Him emotionally, intellectually, fervently, and spiritually—with all aspects of our being.

1 Corinthians 14:15: “What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.” Our prayers to God even come in different forms. Much of the time when we pray we are praying to God through our mind. It’s a heartfelt prayer, but it’s also one we understand with our intellect. But sometimes we just fully pray with our heart crying out to God. We don’t necessarily know how to pray, or what to pray; we just know we need to pray. This is when the Holy Spirit helps us to pray. You could say this form of prayer is more of an art. It’s something that bypasses our mind. It supersedes our intellectual thought processes. It’s at a time when intellectual expression isn’t enough. But a full-on heart pouring out to God is required.

Psalms 104:10-11: “He sendeth the springs into the valleys, [which] run among the hills. They give drink to every beast of the field: the wild asses quench their thirst.” God even shows His poetic nature through what He has written to us. The science of His creation is described through the artistic poetry of His written word. It’s both beautiful and wonderful at the same time. In our understanding of God, we don’t understand and relate to Him in only one way. It’s not just art; it’s not just science. Our relationship to God is much like His creation: it’s both art and science.
