…Let’s go deeper—Depression isn’t forever

God understands our depressed state of being even if we don’t understand it ourselves. It makes sense, then, that we should turn to Him when we find ourselves in this state of mind. If we can look to God for help and support in these times, then we can certainly look to Him for help in finding the answers.

Psalms 43:5: “Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope in God: for I shall yet praise him, [who is] the health of my countenance, and my God.” Sometimes you have to talk to yourself. I believe that’s what the Psalmist was doing here. He was asking himself why he was feeling down and out. He was saying to himself, “Have you forgotten that you serve a mighty God who is on your side? Have you forgotten that He is the one who gives strength and health and the ability to feel joy?”

1 Peter 5:7: “Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.” Sometimes we can find ourselves in this depressed state because we have unwittingly brought it on ourselves. Sometimes we’re carrying a heavy load—a load we were never meant to carry. That’s when we need to recognize the one who can carry it all. We need to offload it because it’s bringing us down. We need to offload it and give it to the one who can actually carry it.

Proverbs 12:25: “Heaviness in the heart of man maketh it stoop: but a good word maketh it glad.” It’s amazing what an encouraging word can do for someone else. I’m here to be that encouraging word for you. If you can let go of that anxiety you’re experiencing, I’m convinced you will feel a load lift off of yourself. If you can give it to God, I believe you will even feel a lessening of your state of depression. But that’s the thing—take it to Him. Completely let go of it, and I believe you will be amazed what He can do.

Deuteronomy 31:6: “Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God, he [it is] that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.” Sometimes the enemy of depression can seem like an overwhelming enemy. We see that enemy and don’t know how we will overcome it. We see it coming like the darkness of a cloud about to overtake us. But get your eyes off the cloud and back onto God. The God of the Universe can certainly help you where you are right now. Keep your feet firmly planted in Him and in His word.

Romans 15:13: “Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.” ‘All joy and peace in believing’—did you know that there is a joy and peace in believing? There certainly is. It’s this faith in Him that gives us hope. The effects of that are ‘joy and peace’. You could call these natural side effects. It’s the person whose eyes are firmly set on Him that abounds in hope. He helps us in this through the power of the Holy Spirit. Through Him we can see a vision of the future—a future of hope—and know that whatever depression we may feel—it isn’t forever.
