…Let’s go deeper—Life-giving words

Even though we may not have a tendency to think about the importance of choosing our words, that doesn’t mean words should be taken for granted. Something the Bible makes clear over and over is that words have the power to give life and death. We are commanded to be mindful that our words are the kind that give life to others. As much as we appreciate receiving kind words ourselves, we should give the same to others.

Proverbs 18:21: “Death and life [are] in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.” A profound statement on the power of words—it makes you think twice about the words you choose. It also makes you wonder if the verse is overstating the matter. But I think that’s the point of this verse: it’s meant to get across the importance and power of our words. When God created the Universe, He spoke it into existence. Think about that: everything we know and see began with words. When you ponder that reality you come to realize that this verse is right on the mark.

John 6:63: “It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, [they] are spirit, and [they] are life.” Jesus confirmed His words by assuring us the life-giving power of His words. They are the power of God unto Salvation, which is the Gospel message. The Gospel is the message that brings life to our spirits. While the flesh is not renewed, our spirits are renewed ‘day by day’.

Galatians 6:7: “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.” We have a tendency to think this is limited to physical things we give, whether good or bad. But this verse also applies to our words. We are giving out words every day. They are sowing seeds of strife and discord, or they are sowing seeds of sustenance and love and power. When thinking about a farmer planting his field in the spring, he doesn’t plant anything he doesn’t want to harvest in the Fall. Likewise, why would we? If we can change our thinking to visualize our words as tiny little seeds, I would venture to guess we would be more conscious of what they contain.

Proverbs 16:24: “Pleasant words [are as] an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.” Did you know that honey never goes bad? It’s kind of like kind words to someone else—they never go out of style. It also has medicinal properties. Words can give hope, words can bring relief, and words can have a health-inducing effect. And sometimes when people are the most desperate, that’s all they have; they cling to hope to hear words that will give them hope.

Psalms 100:4: “Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, [and] into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, [and] bless his name.” Words of thanks, and praise, and gratitude towards people can make a difference, but really begin with a heart of praise towards God. If you notice, our entering into Him begins with a thankful and praise-filled heart. Our words of encouragement carry more power from a heart that’s tapped into God. It’s true that you can’t give what you don’t have. But if you have the joy of the Lord you have something that’s true and genuine and others will notice as unique and life-giving. When we stay tapped into Him, He makes sure we have joy to overflowing that provides an abundance which flows out to others.
