…Let’s go deeper—Signature of approval

I think when someone puts their signature on something it means that it matters, it means that it has significance, or it means that it’s of high quality. What painter wants to put their autograph on something that they don’t think is deserving? That’s similar to the way God put His signature on us. By making us in His image He has put His mark on us. He tells us we matter, and He tells us we’re significant, and He tells us we’re approved. In like manner, we shouldn’t approve things that we don’t feel are significant or meet our approval.

1 John 4:1: “Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.” Knowing whose signature has been placed on what sometimes takes discernment. It would be nice if we just automatically knew, but we have to use wisdom and we have to realize what bears witness with our spirits. If it’s not a signature we recognize, we should be wary.

1 Timothy 4:7: “But refuse profane and old wives’fables, and exercise thyself [rather] unto godliness.” Some things we just don’t need to approve of—that includes things that are of no consequence and also things that are kind of off-the-wall. Sometimes we can get wrapped up in things or begin to take on things that aren’t useful or right. If we get distracted by these forgeries we can end up missing the real thing. If we are able to recognize the signature of God, we will be able to immediately spot a counterfeit.

Philippians 1:10: “That ye may approve things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ;” We should always be striving to approve things that are excellent. We shouldn’t just put our signature on anything. If it doesn’t meet our standard—or more importantly—if it doesn’t meet God’s standard we shouldn’t waste our time on it. Those things that are of the highest caliber are the ones that will put us in the place for blessing and righteousness before the eyes of God.

Galatians 1:10: “For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.” The signature of men doesn’t mean much; but the signature of God does. We can either look for God’s signature, or man’s. Those are really the only two to choose from. The problem is that we so easily accept man’s signature on something and forget about God’s. But what’s even more important is to know that God’s is the most important and enduring one.

Genesis 1:27: “So God created man in his [own] image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.” The biggest thing God placed His signature on is you. He did that by creating you in His image. That’s the value He places on us. It’s a stamp of approval. He didn’t whip you together on a whim. It took forethought and planning and time before you ever came into being. That’s the biggest signature of approval ever—is the one placed on you.
