…Let’s go deeper—Things don’t always happen the way we expect

God has His way of working in our lives that we don’t always understand in the moment. We can often look back and see his hand in it all. And some things we may never understand while on this earth. But we can know and trust that God is using it to bring us to a certain point; that He’s using it for our good.

Proverbs 16:9: “A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps.” We certainly have a way of making our plans. But while we plan things, God may have better things in mind. This may involve us taking different routes than we had planned. And our plans aren’t necessarily wrong, but it’s having our plans in subjection to His that matters. Those things we couldn’t anticipate are clearly within His view. It’s best to keep Him in the driver’s seat.

Romans 8:28: “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to [his] purpose.” Our trust in Him is well placed knowing that He has our best interests at heart. The things that seem like crushing blows, that trip us up, and even seem will lead to our imminent demise are even being worked in our favor. The comfort we have is in knowing that no matter the apparent struggles we face, God can turn those around and work them to our benefit. That’s a great God. Whether good or bad, God works things to the good in the life of the believer.

Psalms 37:23: “The steps of a [good] man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way.” A reiteration of Proverbs 16:9, this adds another level of depth. While God desires to order our steps, He delights when we actually allow Him to. Since God is only desiring to bring us to a good end, there’s no reason we shouldn’t allow Him to lead us. It’s the delight of the Father to direct our steps and see the good fruit it produces in our lives.

Proverbs 18:16: “A man’s gift maketh room for him, and bringeth him before great men.” The gifts God has given us, He also makes a way for us to use. And the gifts He grants us He also calls us to use. When we’re faithful to use them, I believe He will be faithful to bless them. He’ll give opportunities where we knew none existed. All we can do is to be faithful to use our gifts; it’s He who’s the one that makes them successful.

Isaiah 48:10: “Behold, I have refined thee, but not with silver; I have chosen thee in the furnace of affliction.” While speaking about the leading and direction of God in our lives, we would be remiss to leave out the element of His refining work in our lives. Sometimes His leading is in directions we would never choose ourselves. But this path through the wilderness isn’t meant to be the final destination. It’s only for a time, and it’s used for a purpose. Some things that need to change in us can only be removed in the furnace of affliction. While we don’t choose to enjoy it, we can choose to trust Him in it. And this refining doesn’t only remove impurities from us, it sets our hearts on trusting Him more. All other supports are removed with only Him left to hold us.
