…Let’s go deeper—Sneaky tactics

Some of the sneaky tactics we have to deal with are disheartening, but we shouldn’t be taken by surprise. People have been trying to gain an upper hand through various under-handed ways since the fall of man in the garden. These things may seem to succeed at times, but we can know that they won’t ultimately be successful in the end.

Ecclesiastes 1:9: “The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.” As much as we like to think things change and evolve over time, they’re essentially the same as they’ve ever been. There are no new sins; just different people doing them. We think technology changes things, but technology and societal changes don’t change the condition of the human heart. The corrupting power of sin still taps into our sinful natures like greed, envy hatred, and lust. But with a heart change comes a chance for a new life. That’s what Jesus offers those willing to turn over their old natures and take on a new one.

James 3:17: “But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.” This is the true wisdom; true wisdom understands that living a fruitful life begins by bearing good fruit. That happens when we get our focus off of ourselves and living a life that is pleasing to God. It’s a general understanding that under-handed ways of dealing with people aren’t going to make us happy. It’s a knowing that when we try to gain the advantage in the wrong way, no one really gains the advantage, least of all us.

Proverbs 19:1: “Better is the poor that walketh in his integrity, than he that is perverse in his lips, and is a fool.” Walking in integrity is more valuable than having nice things. If you have to sacrifice your character for material wealth, then what good is it? You have to make a determination that even though it can be tempting to sidestep the truth for your own benefit, you still have to be able to sleep at night. You still have to be at peace, and you won’t ever be at peace until you’re at peace with God.

Ephesians 5:8: “For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light.” Some things we’re not proud of may have been a part of our past, but that doesn’t mean they have to be a part of our futures. Jesus offers a new way. He offers us the chance to shake off the shackles of our self-serving natures and live a life for something bigger than ourselves. He opens up a new world for us where, in the past, we thought we were free when we could do whatever we want, but we now know the true freedom is found in him.

Psalms 37:1: “A Psalm of David. Fret not thyself because of evildoers, neither be thou envious against the workers of iniquity.” It can be easy to become frustrating when we see evildoers prosper. It appears they’re getting ahead, and getting ahead by doing wrong. But it’s really nothing to be envious of. They don’t have the priceless value of a clean conscious. Everything they gain through scheming really becomes an albatross around their neck. They have to live with what they’ve done, and all their material possessions are only a reminder of how they got it. All that you have, even if it’s only a little, is worth that much more if gained through a righteous life.
