…Let’s go deeper—-The American Dream

While we know God isn’t opposed to us gaining more, we know He’s concerned with our motives for gaining more. But more importantly, when God speaks of us building a house, He’s usually speaking in terms of the foundation of our life. He’s talking on a deeper level about our spiritual house. It’s when we get that house right that we can begin thinking about our physical house.

Luke 12:18: “And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods.” The story of this man making earthly plans while his Heavenly ones are left undone is a sad one. His dream was too small. He was thinking only of what was right in front of him while neglecting what was before him. He was planning, but planning foolishly. If he had had his house in order in Heaven, his house on earth wouldn’t have been the first thing on his mind.

Luke 6:48: “He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock.” This wise man is the man who planned accordingly. He built a house, but one that would withstand the forces of nature because of what it’s built on. Being founded on Christ and His words is the foundation that’s eternal. You won’t be moved because the thing your founded on can’t be moved. Whether those things that try to shake you are the circumstances of life, or eternity itself, your house is sure because it isn’t relying on just you, but relying on the Rock.

Matthew 6:24: “No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.” Jesus speaks here of who our master is. He speaks to the matter of loyalty to one master meaning disloyalty to the other. A mind set only on the material things has been distracted by their lustre. But serving God means you trust Him with those things. You trust Him with those things and He takes care of those things as your Heavenly Father.

1 John 2:16: “For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.” If we are merely thinking of the here and now, we’re being duped into living such a low level of life. We’re being carnally minded without any thought to the spirit. The Bible speaks to this. It says that “To be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.” – Rom. 8:6. Those things that feed our flesh can never satisfy, but are only hindrances to true satisfaction in the Spirit.

Acts 4:11: “This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner.” This stone—this cornerstone is the keystone for every spiritual house. Many reject this stone, and it even became a stumbling stone for many. But a person rejects this stone to their own peril. The Pharisees had trouble accepting this stone—Jesus. But He’s the sure foundation that every solid house is built upon. The Pharisees missed this. They missed living the true dream because they were so focused on the house they had already built. They didn’t see that by embracing Jesus you learn what living really means.
