Let’s go deeper—How do you define spirituality?

The spiritual exists, although some are more reluctant to admit it than others. And once we understand that, it compels us to learn what that spirituality means. God shows us an image of the spiritual that’s consistent; it stands alone because it doesn’t fit with all the others. It answers our questions about why we’re here, what to do, and what lies beyond the here and now.

Ecclesiastes 3:11: “He hath made every thing beautiful in his time: also he hath set the world in their heart, so that no man can find out the work that God maketh from the beginning to the end.” God has made it so that men know the truth about their existence. The truth about this world and it’s context within eternity is known in the heart of every human being. Whether they’re willing to admit that to themselves is another matter entirely. People have a strange ability to lie to themselves—and lie about the most profound things. And the worst lies happen to be the ones we tell ourselves.

Luke 9:55: “But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of.” The condition of the spirits of the disciples in the early days was pretty immature. They didn’t understand much of what Jesus was doing, or even His purpose on the earth. Here, the disciples react harshly when those in a Samaritan village refuse to receive Jesus; they ask Jesus if they should call fire down from Heaven to consume them in the same manner as Elijah. This was Jesus response: “Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of.” And they truly didn’t. This request by the disciples went against the entire purpose of His ministry on earth. He was trying to save lives, not take them. If we were to examine our own hearts sometimes, I wonder if we wouldn’t react in the same immature manner. But when we learn and grow in Him, we learn what the truly spiritually mature person does.

Roman 1:20: “For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:” One of the great evidences pointing to God is His own creation. People can eagerly look everywhere for evidence of God and still miss it; because it’s right in front of them. It’s a classic case of missing the forest for the trees. God doesn’t hide in the shadows, but He ‘hides’ in plain sight. He shows Himself throughout creation. And when we begin to see Him for who He is, He begins to reveal Himself to us in different ways.

John 14:6: “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. “ The exclusive nature of Christianity is on clear display because Jesus said as much. For all those who would want to dispute that there’s only one way to God, they will have to take it up with Jesus. Some that would want to subscribe to the all-roads-to-lead-to-God notion would naturally be at odds with Jesus. It’s interesting that Jesus didn’t try to bend His philosophy to fit everyone’s whims. He loved them enough to tell them the truth. Since truth is narrow and exclusive by nature, it lends much to the validity of the Christian faith. It can’t be ‘a’ truth, or one version of the truth; it would have to be ‘the truth’.

John 11:25: “Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:” The whole purpose of why Jesus came was so that we might live. That’s what all this leads to. His death on the cross wasn’t for nothing. If the all-roads-lead-to-God premise were true, it would by default make His death unnecessary. He wouldn’t have needed to die because and we could have just chosen any other way. But He did die for us. He made the sacrifice that needed to be made. No one else did that; only He. God requires a sacrifice for sin. God needed a perfect sacrifice and He was the only one that could do it. It’s here that the truth of the resurrection story hits us as the only story that makes sense.
