Much of what we achieve for personal glory will be left in the ash heap of history. There is no purpose for it beyond the ‘here and now’. But the things done with an eternal purpose in mind and for the glory of God will stand forever.
Matthew 7:24: “Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:” The foundations we build our life upon are so important. That’s where it all begins. We can even do all the right things and achieve all the right things, but if we do them for the wrong reasons, or with the wrong motives, it’s all for nought. We’ll be left with nothing but a pile of dust at the end.
1 Corinthians 10:31: “Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.” The underlying purpose and reason for the things we do is to bring glory to God. This is foreign to much of our thinking, especially today. We tend to think first about bringing glory to ourselves. But I don’t think we often realize how self-centered, selfish, and short-sighted that is. It’s easy to want that personal glory, but then when I think about how wrong that is, it makes me cringe. It makes me cringe, and I think that’s a good thing. It helps me refocus my efforts and thoughts on what’s important.
Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” God’s not against personal achievement. I believe He’s designed us to set goals and try to attain them. It’s our mindset in it that matters. I have to remember that anything I am able to achieve is only because of God anyway. He gave me the ability to begin with. And I’m not doing anything that He doesn’t allow me to do. It’s easy to forget that.
James 4:3: “Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume [it] upon your lusts.” I think ‘consuming it upon your lusts’ is the key part of this verse for this discussion. Much of our lust involves personal glory for ourselves. We want some outstanding recognition of us. Maybe that’s why we don’t receive much of what we want. But when we shift our focus off of us, and onto Him, I think that’s when God takes notice and we begin to see Him move in our lives.
1 Corinthians 3:13: “Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is.” When it’s all said and done, this will be the result of our efforts. All of our work will have to stand the test of fire. If it’s things we tried to achieve for ourselves, and personal glory, it’s going to burn up. But if we were working with an eternal purpose in mind, and to bring Glory to God, it will still be standing, and we will be glad we were living for something much larger than ourselves.
