It’s interesting that we tend to place so much emphasis on wealth. God does as well. He does want us to be materially blessed. But the wealth He is concerned about most is of far more importance than the one we are usually concerned with.
3 John 1:2: “Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.” This desire for Christians did involve material blessings. But it did that in the hope that people’s external blessings would match the internal spirit-man. The two were not meant to be incongruent. To be blessed materially and yet bankrupt internally is one of the saddest scenarios one could find themselves in.
Luke 16:10: “He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much.” We learn to manage more by managing what we have. We can show who we are, and that we’re trustworthy, by being faithful with what we have. This is a universal principle. We often think that our problem is that we don’t have enough when we’re actually mismanaging what we
Matthew 6:19-21: “Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” While having and gaining possessions in this life isn’t necessarily wrong, it’s not to be our main motive. Our focus is to be thinking about eternity. There’s nothing we have here that we can take with us. This is temporary. The best way to live a consistent life is to take inventory of our spiritual growth. We don’t need to be concerned about wealth taking over our lives if we have the spiritual maturity to handle it.
