Value can be a great thing. Getting value in the things we purchase can be gratifying. But, most importantly, valuing the correct things in life is where life is really lived.
Matthew 10:31: “Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.” First, and foremost, God places the utmost value on us. What knowing this value should do for us is give us a sense of security. Many of us suffer from a multitude of insecurities for this very reason. We don’t know our true value. And because we don’t know our true value, or why we’re valued, we try to make ourselves significant in the wrong ways. If we can come to understand the value God places on us, we wouldn’t try to compensate for our low self-worth in unhealthy ways.
1 Corinthians 6:19: “What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost [which is] in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?” Another thing to place value on is our bodies. We are stewards of this temple we live in. Sometimes we neglect this aspect of our well-being to our own peril. While our spiritual condition is of utmost importance, our spirit won’t have a home to dwell in if we neglect our bodies. We need to maintain our health mentally, spiritually, and physically.
1 Timothy 4:8: “For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.” This one seems to run counter to the previous verse. However, this verse isn’t saying that there is no value in taking care for our bodies. It’s just emphasizing the importance of our spiritual condition. It doesn’t mean that taking care of our bodies isn’t valuable. It just means that a godly life focused our spirit has much broader implications.
Matthew 6:20: “But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:” There’s one thing for sure, where our focus is our mind, time and resources is where our treasure will be. What God tells us to do is really simple and profound. The things we collect here and now are just for a limited time. But we need to shift our focus on the things that are eternal. If we want to have eternal treasures, we need to have an eternal purpose.
Ephesians 5:16: “Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.” Maybe one of the most important things we should value is our time. Since it’s in limited supply, there’s only so much we can get done in the time we have been given. That’s why we have to decide what we want to get done. What ‘redeeming the time’ means is to be mindful of our time and use it in a purposeful way. The way we get the most value from our lives is to ascribe meaning to our time by using it in a meaningful way. That’s my goal. That’s why I say, “I’m all about value”.
