…Let’s go deeper—‘Design by committee’ never works very well

The thing about individuality is that we seem to change as individuals, but then we move forward as a group. We make individual changes, but our individual changes impact the group as a whole. And we can help others on their path to change, but they still have to make those positive changes themselves.

Job 13:5: “O that ye would altogether hold your peace! and it should be your wisdom.” Job had a number of people willing to give him advice. They were his friends, supposedly. The problem is that they were all wrong. They were all looking at things from their own perspective, but the problem was that their perspective was wrong. They each offered a little bit different piece of advice. They thought they understood the situation, but they really didn’t.

Romans 1:20: “For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, [even] his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:” God has characteristics and attributes. We sometimes forget those characteristics are reflected in His creation. When you think about all the unique plants and animals there are in the world, you can begin to see the unique character of God. His design is a reflection of who He is.

Psalms 119:24: “Thy testimonies also [are] my delight [and] my counsellors.” The Psalmist declares his delight in God’s word. He states that they are his counsellors. We need a standard for truth. That’s why we need to go to His word. Those times when we need direction are the times we need to dig into His word. Sometimes the answer isn’t as far away as we think. Sometimes it’s right in front of us.

Psalms 119:99: “I have more understanding than all my teachers: for thy testimonies [are] my meditation.” A truly wise person is one who understands the Word of God. As we begin to understand and receive it into our hearts it begins to change us. We begin to be shaped and ‘designed’ by His word. It’s a process that makes us into who He wants us to be, and who we were truly meant to be.

Isaiah 9:6: “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” Our creator isn’t done ‘designing’ us once we are born. He is continuing to ‘design’ as we grow more in Him. And getting counsel from fellow believers is fine. But we need to remember that our ultimate counselor is Him. We sometimes forget all the names attributed to God—we sometimes forget that one of those names is ‘Counselor’.
