…Let’s go deeper—What’s it mean to be a moderate?

Being moderate on something isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It’s just a matter of what we are moderate on. We can still negotiate with people and find common ground. But some things are non-negotiable, and some things aren’t up for debate.

Matthew 10:34: “Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.” Jesus drew a hard line in the sand. Many people get the mistaken impression that Jesus came to establish peace in the world. But He knew there would never be peace in the world as it is now. He was making stark contrast between what He stands for, and what the world stands for. Some people will never be convinced of the truth. But there will be peace one day when He comes to establish it on earth.

Romans 1:25: “Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.” Some are doing this today. We have a whole segment of the population who are so concerned about the condition of our physical world. But the conditions of the hearts of men are not really in their consciousness. And any ideas about God are the furthest thing from their thinking. It’s not about creation, but the Creator.

James 4:17: “Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth [it] not, to him it is sin.” This is the clearest definition, and the dividing line for sin. It’s simply when we do anything other than what we know to be right. There is no compromise here; no middle ground; no moderation. Wrong is wrong, and sin is sin. Our conscience many times tells us. It’s something that we can truly know if we want to, but unfortunately, too many times we ignore it.

2 Corinthians 6:15: “And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?” Sometimes we are at such odds with others that we have to part company. It’s not a matter of finding common ground. It’s not a matter of getting them to see your side anymore. They have dug their heels in and there is no getting them to see the truth. It’s a willful denial of the truth. You can only pray that they will one day see the truth.

Romans 12:18: “If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.” I feel I need to include this in here. We shouldn’t go looking for fights. We should try to get along with people as much as we can. And it’s not important to make an issue out of everything. There are some things that are just not worth ‘going to the mat’ for. But when we have to compromise to such a degree that we are no longer standing for our beliefs, it’s time to do check-up. We need to see if we really want to give up that much just so we can be seen as ‘reasonable’—so we can carry the label of a ‘moderate’.
