…Let’s go deeper—Pride comes in many forms

There’s much to be said about pride. But we can keep a check on our pride by recognizing it. And we can replace it with something even better—humility.

Proverbs 27:2: “Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth; a stranger, and not thine own lips.” Sometimes we think that if we don’t toot our own horn, then no one else will. Well, whether that’s the case, or not, we still need to leave it up to someone else if they should decide to praise us. And if they don’t, then you just keep on keeping on. You just do what you were called to do. Let the chips fall where they may.

Philippians 2:3: “[Let] nothing [be done] through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.” Pride is attitude about others just as much as it is about ourselves. Do we ever consider the needs of others before our own? Do we think about how our actions might impact someone else? Do we consider giving something of ourselves that would actually cost us something? If we answer, “Yes”, then that’s an attitude that precludes pride from dominating our lives.

James 4:10: “Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.” The thing about humility is that if we are humble before Him, then He will make sure we get lifted up. We don’t have to do it ourselves. Just trust Him with it. Whatever credit you may deserve, God knows about it.

Jeremiah 9:23-24: “Thus saith the LORD, Let not the wise [man] glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty [man] glory in his might, let not the rich [man] glory in his riches: But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I [am] the LORD which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these [things] I delight, saith the LORD.” If we have a tendency to glory in ourselves, here’s something else to think about. Whatever strengths or attributes we possess, they are a direct result of God anyway. He made us, so we can give Him the glory. And the thing that we should endeavor to do is know Him. For, when we know Him, we know what He is like. We don’t just know about Him. We have a close, intimate, relationship with Him. And that’s something we can be proud of (in a humble way, of course).
