The ‘more’ that God wants for us all is what truly is ‘more’. Who cares about abundance if it’s an abundance of something that can never satisfy. But God has made clear the he not only offers us truly satisfying life, but an abundance of that life. Material wealth is something we would like to attain, but it’s not something that’s really going to answer the question: What does my heart truly desire?
John 10:10: “The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have [it] more abundantly.” Jesus made a bold statement, and a stark differentiation between Himself and the enemy. Jesus is offering us life. What the enemy offers can never satisfy. The path the enemy offers only does one of three things: steals, kills, destroys. Seeking the wrong path only leaves us empty, dejected, and alone. But God has better things for us than that. If we can get ourselves to look past the glitz and glamour, we can find the things He has for us that will fill the longing in our hearts.
Psalms 16:11: “Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence [is] fulness of joy; at thy right hand [there are] pleasures for evermore.” Psalms is good at really illustrating and providing word pictures for us that help us visualize God’s will for us. The part that stands out to me here is ‘in thy presence is fullness of joy’. That’s what waits for us in His presence. But how much of the time do we make the effort to get into His presence? His joy is waiting for us, but we have to get still and quiet in prayer and press into where His presence is waiting.
Matthew 6:33: “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” Sometimes it’s not really that we are seeking the wrong things. It’s just that we are trying to seek them without Him, on our own. People sometimes think God doesn’t want them to have what they want. Not necessarily. He just doesn’t want us to get what we want outside of Him. When we seek Him first, we leave everything up to Him. That means our wills and desires are subject to Him. That’s a part of our trust. We not only trust Him to lead and guide us, but we trust Him with our desires as well.
Hebrews 13:5: “[Let your] conversation [be] without covetousness; [and be] content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” Notice, this verse tells us not to be covetous. What is covetousness? Essentially, it’s the love of money. It doesn’t say that we can’t desire more money, or have more money. It’s just saying that shouldn’t be our focus. The true gem is found in the last part of this verse—it’s in having Him. We are truly satisfied in having Him in our lives, and knowing that we have Him. To think of that—He will never leave us or forsake us. That is worth more than all the gold in the world.
John 4:14: “But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.” Jesus stated this to the Samaritan woman at the well. Jesus was always talking of higher spiritual applications when people were many times thinking on such a lower earthly level. That’s what Jesus offers us—something better. We get stuck many times thinking on such a low level here on this earth. What’s right in front of us can appear so appealing, but if we will just lift our eyes up to Him we will see that He offers the satisfying life we were looking for—an everlasting life.
