…Let’s go deeper—Comfort and Joy

Actually, that famous song, “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen”, succinctly describes the Salvation message. It declares the hope we have because of Christ and His Birth, Death, Burial, and Resurrection. It’s saying that we can have comfort and joy when we acknowledge this truth. This is the source of comfort and joy we sometimes find elusive.

Isaiah 9:6: “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” This—another popular verse that is quoted during the Christmas Season—declares for us the comfort and joy we have in Christ. His names that He is known by are listed here, which also describe His attributes. I guess the most fitting one for this topic is ‘Counsellor’. He’s a counsellor to us. He counsels us in our direction, but not only that, He counsels us by being that friend that’s sticks closer than a brother. He talks to us in those difficult times. And He lets us know that we are His.

John 14:16: “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;” Jesus spoke to His disciples about another Comforter. He was referring to the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit fills us and gives us wisdom we wouldn’t otherwise have. He gives us comfort when we can gain comfort from no one else.

Proverbs 17:22: “A merry heart doeth good [like] a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.” When we are joyful and happy, it actually benefits us physically. That’s why the Bible repeatedly encourages us and gives us a positive outlook on life. It’s something we have to work at sometimes, but something that is so essential.

John 15:11: “These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and [that] your joy might be full.” Jesus spoke to us through His word about the hope we have as believers. These were meant to be words of comfort, and they were meant to be words of joy. We are comforted because we know we have hope in Him. And we have joy because we are comforted by the hope we have in Him.

1 John 1:4: “And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full.” God’s Word was written so that we could be joyful. It’s about comfort, and joy, and the hope we have in Him, and the future He has prepared for us. Sometimes we lose sight of that hope. Sometimes we are too distracted by the darkness in order to see the light. But that’s when we need to redirect and look into His written word, so that we can once again experience…..comfort and joy.
