…Let’s go deeper—It’s not always nice to be nice

In thinking about being nice, it’s important to remember that Jesus did and said things that wouldn’t have always fit our modern-day definition of nice. He did these things because He loved people and He wanted them to know the truth. He knew that was going to benefit them. But sometimes a realization of the truth presents a requirement for change. That’s the part people usually don’t like. Change is difficult, change takes effort, and change can take time before you see the benefits.

Romans 12:18: “If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.” First of all, I want to emphasize the fact that we should be nice and kind to others when at all possible—lest I invoke a militant attitude amongst everyone. This verses emphasizes the importance of that. There’s the old saying, “You catch more flies with honey than vinegar.” And it’s very true. What God wants us to be in our communities is a shining example and witness—and an appealing one—for others. People are much more likely to hear what you have to say if it’s in a presentable package.

Matthew 23:13: “But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in [yourselves], neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.” Some of us would say that Jesus wasn’t very nice here. But we need to look at why He was so angry. The reason Jesus was angry with the Pharisees and scribes was their unwillingness to acknowledge and tell the truth. Not only that, but they were leading others astray by keeping the truth from them. The situation required a strong rebuke. And Jesus gave it in the words He spoke here.

John 8:32: “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” This is what is so great about truth, even if we are reluctant to speak it or hear it sometimes. The truth will bring freedom to the hearer when they properly understand it. That’s why it’s more important to make our priority in speaking the truth rather than in being nice.

Ephesians 6:13: “Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.” Taking a stand for truth means you are going to face resistance. People aren’t always going to take it kindly. That’s why we need to be prepared with putting on the full armor of God. And it’s something that we have to be mindful of on a daily basis. Our stand for truth will not only provoke anger from enemies here on this earth, but also from the enemy of our souls.

Psalms 1:1: “Blessed [is] the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.” Sometimes taking a stand for truth requires us to separate from certain people—as in the kind described above. Sometimes it’s not a verbal statement, but just a deliberate action on our part. That can be just as difficult as declaring a truth. But it’s required for us to remain in the truth. Some may think it’s “not being nice”. But in the end, when people clearly know where you stand, it’s the nicest thing there is.
