…Let’s go deeper—‘Positive’ is good as long as it’s not ‘phony’

Of course, this idea of remaining positive has great implications in the arena of our walk with God. God wants us to be positive and remain confident, but that confidence has to be placed in Him and in what we know He can do in our lives. Sometimes we can easily think we’re believing when we are really only saying we believe. God wants us to have our trust firmly planted in Him and what He has told us in His word.

Matthew 15:8: “This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with [their] lips; but their heart is far from me.” Sometimes what’s in our hearts doesn’t line up with our words. That’s the case here. And this is very important. We can speak the truth in God’s word but not have a heart connected belief in what it says. There’s a kind of disconnect between head and heart. It’s a terrible state to live in. It’s one of discontent because you are disjointed at the core.

Revelation 3:15-16: “I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.” God is looking for a people on fire for Him. He wants us to be committed to the cause. His admonishment here to the Church at Laodicea was a strong one. He wanted to know that they are serious, but they weren’t displaying this by any of their actions. Lukewarm has no power—no effect on anything, and that’s why God spoke so strongly here. He wanted them to make the change within themselves so that they could have an effect on those around them.

Mark 11:23: “For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.” This verse displays for us the power of words backed up with true belief. A heart full of faith can powerfully change its surroundings. Jesus spoke this to His disciples to get them on board the train of faith. He wanted them in a united state within themselves so that they could be powerful forces for change, and they could be a united force to carry the Gospel message forward.

James 2:17: “Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.” Along with a strong belief in our hearts and those things we say follows a firm, committed action to those beliefs. An action followed by what we say we believe is a strong indicator that we believe it. And that’s not a phony person; that’s a positive person. If you are feeling dejected because you’ve realized that you’re being positive at the expense of your cause, don’t despair. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. You’ve now recognized the problem. You now have the opportunity to get your heart in line with your speech. You can build your faith in what you believe. And it’s done by getting into His Word. As it says in Romans 10:17: “So then faith [cometh] by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
