…Let’s go deeper—In the moment…

When I think about that period of time where I had to focus on the present moment, what I was really doing—maybe without fully realizing it—was placing my future in God’s hands. It was a time for me to learn how to trust Him with my future. God gave us power over our present moments and decisions, I think, because He knew that’s all we could handle. He wants us to let Him handle the rest.

Proverbs 16:9: “A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps.” Planning is fine, but we need to do it with the idea of it being subject to God’s plans. Those future things we have in mind should only be written in Magic Marker, and not set in stone. Our plans might not be bad, but God might have better plans in mind. It’s a path guided by Him that has meaning. And it’s each individual moment along that path that allows Him to guide us to that bigger picture.

Psalms 32:8: “I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.” God instructs us in where He wants to lead us. But we have to remember—He doesn’t just instruct us and then let us go. He keeps His eye on us the whole time. This should give us confidence in where He’s leading us to. The knowledge that He has His eye on us helps dispel fear. We keep our eyes on Him because His eye is on us.

Isaiah 43:18-19: “Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, [and] rivers in the desert.” The past can easily yank on us and pull us out of the present moment. It can keep us from enjoyment, it can keep us from blessing, and it can keep us from moving on. Some things so easily get burned into our memory that we wonder how we can ever get over it. But if we have the courage and faith to give it to God we can move forward to the blessings he has in mind for us in the future.

Matthew 6:34: “Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day [is] the evil thereof.” Just as easily as the past can try to pull us out of the present time, the future can, just the same. Sometimes we can feel like we’re being pulled from both directions: the past regrets on one side and the future uncertainties on the other. But we have to stand our ground. We have to let God hold our future in His hands as well. And when we give God both our future and our past we are free to live where we are right now. It’s what we call being ‘in the moment…’
