…Let’s go deeper—Wisdom from above

God is very willing to provide us wisdom if we will just Him for it. We sometimes neglect the most available place for wisdom. We don’t need to figure everything out for ourselves. We can navigate our way with a little help from Him. It’s actually a good habit to get into. And it honors God when we are looking to Him to steer the direction of our life.

Jame 3:17: “But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, [and] easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.” There’s something unique about God’s wisdom—it comes with all the above attributes. Wisdom, when it is properly applied has those characteristics. That’s because true wisdom comes from God and He embodies all those things. It can easily happen where our own wisdom runs out. That’s when we need help with His ‘wisdom from above’.

James 1:5: “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all [men] liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” If we are to ask God for wisdom, inherent in that is an acknowledgement that our own wisdom has run out. It takes humility to do this, but I believe God honors that. What begins with humility also begins with faith. It takes a step in the right direction, but it’s a step that involves trusting Him and not going by what we see. This wisdom—it takes us to another level that we could have never gotten to on our own.

Proverbs 10:23: “[It is] as sport to a fool to do mischief: but a man of understanding hath wisdom.” I think the foolish make unwise decisions because they don’t take things seriously enough. This verse states that they take is as a kind of sport. The wise are exactly the opposite: they act with wisdom because they know that the decisions they make matter. ‘Understanding’ means they know what’s at stake. Using wisdom means you act with a plan and purpose in mind. This verse shows a dichotomy of opposites; one who doesn’t know the implications of their actions, and one who does.

Job 12:12: “With the ancient [is] wisdom; and in length of days understanding.” One advantage of the aged is that they have gone through a lot of the experiences some of us haven’t gone through yet. There’s not much better advice than getting it from people who have gone through some stuff. They don’t just speak in theory; they speak in practical action where the rubber meets the road. And you can take their advice to heart because you know they can identify with what you’re going through.

Psalms 111:10: “The fear of the LORD [is] the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do [his commandments]: his praise endureth for ever.” This is the truly wise person—the one who has a reverence for God in his heart. This is true wisdom because it starts in the right place. Wisdom that is from above is the kind that understands there are rules we need to live by in order to be successful. The wise person knows he can’t make up the rules as he goes along. But it’s not a relationship based on fear, as we think of fear; it’s a relationship based on love as a servant who understands his master.
