…Let’s go deeper—Escape from reality

I believe God wants us to have times of escape from our reality. I believe He wants us to know the difference between fantasy and reality. But, mostly, I believe God wants us to escape to Him when the realities of life become too much.

1 Corinthians 10:13: “There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God [is] faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear [it].” One of the things we do need to escape from is temptation. But God has shown that He is faithful in always providing that escape for us. We can also take comfort in knowing that these things we face aren’t unique to us. Other people have dealt with the same things. And if God helped them overcome them, then He can help us as well.

Philippians 4:8: “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things [are] honest, whatsoever things [are] just, whatsoever things [are] pure, whatsoever things [are] lovely, whatsoever things [are] of good report; if [there be] any virtue, and if [there be] any praise, think on these things.” Filling our minds with good things doesn’t mean we are escaping from reality. We are just trying to gain a proper perspective on reality. When we have our minds in line with the word of God, we know that our perspective is right. And part of escaping temptation means getting rid of the tempting thoughts. But once we do that we have to fill our minds with good things; our minds can’t just remain empty. ‘If there be any virtue, and if there be any praise’—this means look for the virtuous and praiseworthy things. These are the proper things to focus our minds on.

1 John 4:18: “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.” Sometimes our escape—or our feeling the need to escape—is based on fear. We want to escape, but not escape in the good way. We are running from the thing we fear the most. It’s here that we need to remember the love that God has clothed us in. This love is meant to preclude all fears we encounter. It’s a heart so trusting in God that the thought of harm runs entirely contrary to their understanding—that’s perfect love.

Matthew 21:22: “And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.” Our escape into the arms of God isn’t just one of protection but also one of provision. Again, it’s our trust and faith that are the basis for this relationship to flourish. This trusting comes through learning and experience. We let go of what we know in favor of what we believe: the belief that he not only will answer our prayers, but that He wants to.

Psalms 119:114: “Thou [art] my hiding place and my shield: I hope in thy word.” We have the comfort of knowing God is there to protect and to provide. The way we know this is due to the promises He has placed in His word. The Psalmist knew the promises God had given here; this was his basis for his hope. Likewise, in this, we aren’t escaping reality, but trusting the one who holds our reality in His hands.
