…Let’s go deeper—The Latest and Greatest

Those things we look to change so quickly, we may not be changing in the right way. Those changes we do make might just be a cloak for the real changes needed. And newer isn’t always better; sometimes it’s just newer.

Philippians 4:11: “Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, [therewith] to be content.” Being content with what we have can be something of an art. The false belief that new things or new experiences will bring us contentment and fulfillment seem to only bring us to a new place of discontent. This can easily perpetuate a cycle of always looking for the next ‘latest and greatest’ thing. However, the change we’re looking for doesn’t commence when we’ve found this thing that can change our external experience, but when we find what needs to change inside of us.

Matthew 23:26: “[Thou] blind Pharisee, cleanse first that [which is] within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.” Jesus, here, tells the Pharisees to make the needed internal changes first; to not give attention to the outside at the expense of the inside. God is always calling us to deal with our sin first so that He can do the work He wants to do in our lives. We eventually find that external change can be great, but those changes only hold value unless followed by the needed internal transformation. Cleaning the inside of the cup is first priority.

Lamentations 3:22: “[It is of] the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.” It’s due to the fact that He doesn’t change that we can have such confidence in our walk with Him. If we’re going to get so excited about the new up and coming thing, we shouldn’t discount the fact that some of the greatest things never change. While God clearly sees our shortcomings, He longs and desires to be compassionate toward us. This is one thing we can be thankful never changes.

Ecclesiastes 3:1: “To every [thing there is] a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:” Sometimes we’re anxious for change, but the time is not yet. It’s important that we recognize there are times and seasons on God’s calendar that our lives fit into. We can sometimes short-circuit the process in making changes we’re not quite ready for yet. We can make countless external changes in an effort to speed up the process, only to find that it’s not speeding up anything.

1 John 2:17: “And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.” These worldly desires are truly fleeting; you can’t wait to acquire that next new thing one day, and the next it’s old hat. That’s what feeds this never-ending cycle of always acquiring ‘the latest and greatest’. It’s an effort to keep that feeling of excitement over what’s new and novel going. What we find is that it’s an exhausting experience. It’s difficult to have peace and contentment when you’re never at peace with where you are. When we’re at peace with God, we find these outside experiences take on secondary importance. The peace that so often eludes us is right within our reach; it makes one wonder why we’re often reaching to find it somewhere else.
