…Let’s go deeper—Seeing the other side of the story

He can see it all from His viewpoint. What frustrates us from our lateral perspective is our lack of clarity in seeing the view from the top. We don’t understand how someone can think the way they do. But God knows why, even if it’s not according to the truth.

Ephesians 4:14: “That we [henceforth] be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, [and] cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;” As much as we like to be open to discussion, there are certain things we have to have solidified within ourselves. If we’re willing to debate everything, it leaves us on a ground of uncertainty—much like a quicksand where you don’t have a firm footing on anything. The Gospel message and foundational doctrinal truths are some of those things. If we picture someone continually knocking on our door with some new idea, or some new faith to believe, it leaves you in a place where you have no foundational truths to build from. It leaves you in a place where you can’t grow and you’re left in a place of confusion.

Isaiah 1:18: “Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.” God—in reasoning with us—works in our hearts to reveal the truths about ourselves we’re often unwilling to see. The uncompromising truth He holds is the only one we can be measured by. But while God holds this truth—and is this truth—He doesn’t bludgeon us with the truth; He calls us to Himself through the gentle pulling of the Holy Spirit tugging on our hearts. This, leading us to see the only story—His story.

James 3:17: “But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, [and] easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.” Extending an olive branch to the other side can be one of the first steps towards understanding. That’s not to say you’ll end up agreeing with them, but now you at least understand where they’re coming from. All the characteristics described here put us in position to gain a clearer perspective of what’s at stake. Also, avoiding hypocrisy gives us credibility with the other side. If we can be honest with ourselves, they know we’ll be honest with them.

Proverbs 16:25: “There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof [are] the ways of death.” In the face of opposing ideas, we have to prepare ourselves for the notion that the other side may be so beholden to their viewpoints merely because they seem right. They don’t really have any solid argumentation for it, but it just seems to them that that’s the way it should be. This can be a difficult hill to climb. Often it’s an argument based on feelings. But knowing this might be the obstacle to them understanding can help in knowing how to approach them.

1 Peter 3:15: “But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and [be] ready always to [give] an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:” What we can’t do is convince everybody of what we believe. But what we can do is always be ready to give an answer for the hope that lies within us. It’s key, here, that we do this with meekness and fear. Presentation matters. Those things people see in you which exemplify the love of Christ can draw questions out of them that you can’t always anticipate. Being ready to answer often means you can just speak to them from your personal experience, and when you do, they might just end up seeing your side of the story.
