…Let’s go deeper—Strategy

The Bible is full of strategies. although, we may not often think of them as that. But the Bible does give us a framework for life: how to be successful; how to live right; how to be pleasing to God. It’s not a strategy based on guesswork, but a well laid-out plan which God has given us to follow.

Proverbs 14:8: “The wisdom of the prudent [is] to understand his way: but the folly of fools [is] deceit.” It appears wisdom and having a good understanding of the path you’re taking go hand-in-hand. It’s not usually known ahead of time what obstacles we might face, but we can have a basic understanding of the path ahead. A prudent man is concerned with those things in front of him and how to rightly face them. He has a good understanding of what’s needed and how to attack it, but no interest in attaining it through devious schemes. For at the forefront of his mind isn’t what he can gain; but who he is.

Proverbs 24:27: “Prepare thy work without, and make it fit for thyself in the field; and afterwards build thine house.” In all things of value there seems to be a proper order, a list of steps, and a way to execute them. The metaphor, here, of building a house illustrates the ineptitude displayed in approaching a task with no plan in mind. In showing the steps, it also exposes flaws in not having the right steps. It shows the importance of foundation. It shows the value of sometimes having to prepare the way for the work to begin. All of these things work together and coalesce in the formation of strategy.

Habakkuk 2:2: “And the LORD answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make [it] plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it.” Without a vision, we often find ourselves adrift. There’s little value in running if you don’t know what you’re running towards. That’s the fuel that vision provides. And writing it down is an integral part of helping us remember the goal we’re working toward so diligently. The implication here is that in order for someone to run he has to first know why he’s running. And when the vision’s made plain, it helps us focus like a laser on the target at hand.

Proverbs 3:6: “In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” Not to be dismissed, or diminished, is God’s work in all this. We can plan all we want, but unless God is a part of our plan, it’s all for naught. The idea of planning for the believer is always contingent on one thing: God’s plans for us. Meaning, we make plans and strategies, but they’re always subject to God’s authority. They’re always subject to change if God so wills it. That’s why we pray “Lord willing…” Any good plan needs a leader, and if that leader is us we can easily mess it up. While we do the work, God is ultimately the one who makes it work.

Joshua 1:8: “This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.” Here’s a good strategy in all things. Getting our lives in line means getting our hearts and minds in line with what is right. That means we have to have the Word firmly embedded in our hearts. A heart that lives the Word is, first, a heart that knows the Word. If you’re looking for strategies, this is certainly a good place to start: Know and understand the Word of God. In that, you’ll find all other strategies fall into place.
