…Let’s go deeper—Daydreaming of something better

God works in our hearts and minds and—through His working—we end up desiring something more. We know that this earthly realm isn’t enough; we know that this isn’t all there is. We have this knowing in our hearts. It’s that desire in our hearts that tells us there’s something better for us to aspire to, not only on earth, but also within ourselves. It takes us out of the mere physical realm and into a higher level: the spiritual.

Hebrews 13:14: “For here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come.” It’s OK to dream of something better. In fact, it’s a good thing. The ‘continuing city’ spoken of here could also be re-phrased ‘eternal city’. Whatever city you live in now is only temporary. It’s just a rest stop on the road to an eternal city. Knowing this and keeping it at the forefront of our minds helps keep us on mission and prevents us from becoming complacent.

Philippians 3:20: “For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ:” Those things we endeavor to pursue, those things we speak of doing—-they reveal that our sights are set on things above and not on things below. They show that we have our minds and hearts geared towards one day seeing Jesus face-to-face. Those things we speak of are also the things we think of the most. They display a heart that’s in the right place: Heavenly-minded.

Hebrews 11:16: “But now they desire a better [country], that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.” Seeking a better country doesn’t necessarily mean you don’t appreciate the one you have. You can be thankful for where you are while, at the same time, longing for something more. The knowledge that we have of God preparing a better place for us shows something about us. It shows something of our trust in Him. We believe what Jesus said when He told the disciples, “And if I go to prepare a place for you…” Our confidence in those words shows we believe what He said. It’s the reason God is not ashamed to be called our God. God is pleased when we just take Him at His word.

1 Corinthians 12:31: “But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way.” While here, we don’t just desire a better place, but we desire a better state of being. We desire an infilling of more of Him to fulfill what He would have us to do. Our gifts aren’t just for us, but to be used for the advancing of God’s Kingdom. When Paul says, “…and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way”, he’s showing you there’s a higher life to live. It is something better because it’s for a higher purpose. It’s for something more outside of ourselves; it’s for something eternal.

Philippians 3:9: “And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:” While we yearn for something better, we also become something better. Our pursuit of more of Him must inevitably lead to less of us. And that’s a good thing. It’s not something to fear. For the more of Him we receive also takes us to higher levels in Him. The righteousness we receive by faith also brings us to higher levels of faith. We desire something more, and believe for something more, because He has revealed to us that there is something more—something better.
