While we begin to get a picture of who God is through His creation, His image is made clearer through the person of Jesus Christ. Jesus came as not only our Savior, but as a revelation of who God is. John 1:4 says, “In him was life; and the life was the light of men.” This light came down and so clearly defined who God is. That God came down to us in flesh—it’s here that we gain the image of God on a personal level.
Genesis 1:26: “And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.” If you want to know something of what God looks like…well, He looks something like us. The Bible tells us that we were made in His image, in His likeness. We are a reflection of God Himself. We are stamped with His image on us. Also known as the Imago Dei (Image of God), this image isn’t just physical, but also a reflection of His other natures as spirit and mind (consciousness).
Romans 1:20: “For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, [even] his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:” God’s first and most obvious means of revelation is through His creation. Those without any religious background are drawn into this philosophical arena through the obvious questions that His creation elicit. It’s here they come face-to-face with the possibility of God. It’s here that they come to terms with something of who God is.
Numbers 23:19: “God [is] not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do [it]? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?” God also shows us who He is by telling us who He is not. He is not a man—-that is, not like a man—-in that He cannot lie. He is not one that will make false claims to one-up another. Our trust is based in the fact that His character is like an immovable rock on which His being rests. The people that have burned us in the past color our experience and the level of trust we place in those in our future. We have a tendency to translate that to our experience with God. But we find that our concerns about trust are misplaced. God doesn’t disappoint in keeping His word.
John 14:9: “Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou [then], Shew us the Father?” Jesus revealed the Father when He revealed Himself. Those who were wanting to see the Father need look no further than He. The character of God, the interests of God, and the love of God were all expressed here. And, ultimately, the most important aspect of who He is was shown by what He was willing to do—-sacrifice Himself for us.
Isaiah 9:6: “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” The many specific characteristics of God are expressed by His many names. A single name isn’t a sufficient reflection of all of who God is. Wonderful expresses His awe-inspiring Glory; Counsellor expresses His daily investment in our affairs; mighty God expresses His power and majesty; everlasting Father expresses His eternal being as Alpha and Omega; and Prince of Peace expresses the peace He brings to our hearts, and the final peace He’ll bring when He establishes His Kingdom upon this earth. It isn’t that God doesn’t show us who He is, we just have to look to find out.
