…Let’s go deeper—Are we on the same page?

An honest attempt to come to an understanding with another—I believe God honors that. Sometimes reconciling viewpoints with another is not possible, but sometimes it is. It just takes a bit of patience and a setting aside of our pride to consider another’s view.

Philippians 2:2-3: “Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, [being] of one accord, of one mind. Let] nothing [be done] through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.” If we keep our pride under, and in check, we have a much better chance of understanding people. It’s our own self-centeredness that can cause us to look down on others instead of try to understand them. But when we place others before ourselves it opens something of a door—a door of understanding—that makes it possible to see someone else more clearly. It helps you to see them from an attitude of compassion rather than an attitude of judgement.

Ephesians 4:3: “Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” An appeal for peace is something that can help bring us together. This striving for peace can help keep us on the same page. When we’re working for peace and reconciliation we can more easily set aside all the barriers that stand in the way of achieving that. Some of those barriers include our own ego, or our placing too much importance on our own ideas. But reminding ourselves there is one Spirit working in us all to make us more Christ-like helps keep us focused on the same goal. It helps us realize that we can either help each other in that process, or hurt each other in that process.

Colossians 3:14: “And above all these things [put on] charity, which is the bond of perfectness.” This is another thing that keeps us on the same page: love. This verse says, ‘…above all these things put on love’. We learn from other scriptures that acting in love is the way we are truly effective. If you were to describe the perfect man he would be described as the one who acts in love. This bond of perfectness should run through everything we do. It’s the main component of an effective life, and it should be the fuel that powers our motives.

1 Corinthians 12:12: “For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also [is] Christ.” If we view the body of believers as one body, then we know that failing to understand one another hurts the entire body as a whole. We are all members of the body of Christ. This is the one page we can easily lose sight of. But when we all get on this page, it reminds us that we’re working for something bigger than ourselves; it reminds us that our actions will impact another; it reminds us that our story doesn’t stand on its own, but is a part of a bigger story which is connected to the stories around us as well.
