…Let’s go deeper—Still waters

Beyond being at peace with ourselves, there’s one other person we need to be at peace with: God. Until we’re at peace with Him, our peace is still not complete. We have an inner stirring and conflict because our spirit is at odds with Him due to sin. It’s here, when we submit to His will and purposes that our peace is complete. And it’s also when we give our cares and concerns over to Him that we can be completely at rest.

Mark 4:39: “And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.” Here Jesus speaks and calms the stormy waters. Peace isn’t just something that Jesus possesses: He is peace; He’s the Prince of Peace. It’s His command of the elements that allows Him to command the elements inside of us. We find our true peace when His peace comes to dwell in us. He calms the waters in us that can’t be calmed any other way.

Philippians 4:7: “And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” Here it speaks about the peace that passes all understanding. That’s the peace Jesus offers us. It also speaks of turning our anxiety over to Him in the verse preceding this, verse 6. Through prayer and faith in His words we can have peace through anything. It’s not a circumstantial element; we can have peace regardless of our circumstances.

John 16:33: “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” This is why we can have peace through Him: He’s greater than any circumstance we may go through in life, so when we’re tied to Him we find that we rise above the waves that would try to capsize us.

Romans 8:6: “For to be carnally minded [is] death; but to be spiritually minded [is] life and peace.” When we live according to our new regenerated spirit we find that we’re at peace. It’s a higher life than that of living according to the flesh—according to your feelings, thoughts, and concerns. It’s one of life overflowing unto Him. A life in the Spirit is entirely different from anything that the world knows. But it’s the life we were meant for. When we walk in the Spirit, peace follows us wherever we go.

Romans 5:1: “Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:” Our final and ultimate peace is through Christ. We start with that and work out from there. Because until we have that peace that He offers, no other peace is lasting or meaningful. And once we do, as He is our mediator, we now have peace with God through Him. We are now justified by faith through Him. Just as He calms the waters in Mark 4:39, so He calms the waters in us.
