Certain kinds of nonconformity are good; others are bad. Again, it depends on what we’re conforming to. What God spells out in His word makes it clear. He helps us to navigate this path of conformity. And it begins by rightly dividing His word of truth.
Romans 12:2: “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what [is] that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” If we are to take a different path from the world, then we are going to look different than the world. It’s easy to fall into the trap of the same ways of thinking as those all around us. But one thing we have to daily struggle against is that pull to become like the world. It takes a conscious effort. It requires vigilance. And it starts by changing our thinking to prevent us from thinking like them so that we won’t look like them either.
Colossians 1:10: “That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God;” This daily walk requires that we be fruitful. Being fruitful only happens when we are working within certain parameters. It requires conformity, of sorts. We can’t just do things any old way and expect them to work. But when we are pleasing to the Lord we are placing ourselves in position to be fruitful. It’s here that conformity can only be helpful and beneficial to us.
Philippians 3:10: “That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;” Paul’s desire incorporated a knowledge that a Christ-like life involved experiencing some of the things that Christ endured. It wasn’t all rosy all the time. But attaining those rosy experiences involves suffering and pressure in order for God to mold you and shape you into the image of His Son. Knowing that we have suffered and died with Christ lets us know we are resurrected with Him as well.
2 Corinthians 3:18: “But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, [even] as by the Spirit of the Lord.” I believe we have to continually keep His glory before us in order to continually be changed by His glory. If we keep looking at Him, and looking to Him, we can’t help but be changed by Him. This transformation is glorious, as He is glorious. It’s a conformity, but a beautiful conformity. Conformity is a beautiful thing if it’s a beautiful image you’re conforming to.
