We don’t think of taxes as a very spiritual topic. But Jesus did, in fact, address this issue. It does have a practical application to our lives, and it does have spiritual implications for our lives. Well, not taxes specifically, but finances in general. Jesus gave, maybe, the most pointed response ever to paying taxes here in Mark 12:17.
Mark 12:17: “And Jesus answering said unto them, Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s. And they marvelled at him.” It probably surprised the Pharisees, here, and even us today, this response by Jesus to paying taxes. Jesus wasn’t above speaking about practical concerns, and He gave a very practical answer. There is a purpose to paying taxes; it renders funds for the providing of public services. That’s a reason to give what is earmarked for taxes to the government, just the way we set aside a certain amount for God.
Romans 13:6-7: “For for this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God’s ministers, attending continually upon this very thing. Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute [is due]; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.” Contrary to what we might sometimes think, God works through our ruling authorities. We might wonder at times how He can use them, but He does. And as God commands us to obey Him, He also commands us to follow the laws of our land. Part of what is being a good Christian is also just being a good citizen. It reflects well on God and it reflects well on His Kingdom.
Hebrews 13:5: “[Let your] conversation [be] without covetousness; [and be] content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” A heart free of covetousness is one that can let go of material things easily. He lets go of them easily because it’s not his focus, and he knows that it’s all temporary anyway. We are mere stewards on this earth. Recognizing this actually gives us more freedom. We aren’t so tied to things and God is free to use us for His purposes. When we asks us to let go of some money to benefit another we can do it because we let go of it in our hearts a long time ago.
Luke 16:11: “If therefore ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true [riches]?” This is just a training ground. God wants to see how we handle wealth down here so that He can know we’ll handle the true wealth in Heaven. I admit, the riches down here can be distracting. We easily get our eyes stuck on it here because it’s in front of us right now. But if we don’t allow our money to get its roots in our heart then we can have a loose relationship with money. Whether we have to pay taxes, or give in the offering, it’s no big deal. We’re content and happy to do it because we’re in control of our money; it’s not in control of us.
