…Let’s go deeper—Business ethics: not just the right thing, but the profitable thing

As a believer, you don’t just do what’s profitable, but you do what’s right. The right thing comes first and the profit comes later. But, of course, I would submit that the right thing is always the profitable thing in the end. Even if you lose out in the short term for the sake of doing what’s right, you will end up better off for it in the end on all fronts.

Colossians 3:17: “And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.” When engaging in business it’s best to start here. We need to remember the reason we’re doing it in the first place. We set out to do whatever industry has called us to and then we dedicate it to Him. We’re thankful for what He’s given us and part of showing our thanks is taking that business or career He’s given us and turning it around and dedicating it to Him.

Proverbs 22:1: “A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold.” We underestimate sometimes the value our name carries in business. You can have a good reputation in a community which carries you a long way; you can have a poor reputation in a community and it’s something continually working against you. People remember when you’ve treated them right. And just as much as they remember that, they don’t tend to forget when they’ve been wronged. But more than a well-established business built on a good name, a good name alone is something you can be proud of for eternity.

Galatians 6:7: “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.” Those things we do in business daily are each a kind of seed sown. We spread seeds that are positive and reap good fruit from them, or we are spreading weeds, of sorts, that spring up and choke out any good fruits we do have. It’s difficult for us to gain any ground when we’re only working against ourselves with seeds poorly sown. But when we’re spreading what’s profitable for all parties involved it ends up profiting us as well.

1 Peter 3:17: “For it is better, if the will of God be so, that ye suffer for well doing, than for evil doing.” Sometimes you may suffer a loss due to your determination to stand for truth. These things must be viewed as minor setbacks. When you have trust in the God who sees the big picture it keeps you from having tunnel vision that only sees the disappointing scenario right in front of you at the time. Just know doing what’s right is right in God’s plain view. He sees our suffering for our stand for truth. This is the kind of suffering that’s much preferred over suffering for what’s wrong. For it’s the suffering for what’s wrong that’s two-fold.

Leviticus 23:22: ”And when ye reap the harvest of your land, thou shalt not make clean riddance of the corners of thy field when thou reapest, neither shalt thou gather any gleaning of thy harvest: thou shalt leave them unto the poor, and to the stranger: I am the LORD your God.” Something that can easily get overlooked in business is charitable giving. But even those without a religious background see the value in this. They see the benefit it has on the community as a whole, and they see the powerful effects it has on individual lives. God has always had a heart for the poor and it only reflects His heart when we leave something for the less fortunate in whatever way we can. These are the business ethics that have a lasting impact. It’s more than just a financial bottom line; it’s a bottom line that can change people’s lives.
