Praying in the Spirit is a way for us to build up our faith when we feel it beginning to falter. It’s a shoring up of what we believe and what we believe God says about us. While we might not consciously understand what’s being said, our spirit knows the truths of what’s being said, and it resonates within us. It’s a way of speaking truth to ourselves by circumventing our intellect. It’s a way of not going by what we physically see but by what we see in the spirit.
Psalms 42:5: “Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance.” The Psalmist talks to himself here. He makes a redirect off of his depressive state to placing his hope in God. It’s sometimes the circumstantial perspective which causes us to lose hope. We see only problem and no answers. But remembering our answers are all found in Him brings comfort. We now see the hope which we so easily lost. We realize the problem is never bigger than the answer.
Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” One of the most encouraging lines in the Bible, this speaks to us each on a personal level. Knowing first that our strength isn’t based in ourselves is actually something of a relief. We have limits; we have shortcomings; we will eventually come to the end of ourselves.
The opportunities God offers us by investing in our lives take us to new levels of possibility. We now have all things possible because we rely on Him as our source of strength.
Psalms 118:24: “This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.” This verse, while being encouraging, is something of a refocusing of our perspective and our priorities. It’s an acknowledgement of who is in control of our day and our time. It’s a recommitment of our time to Him. By placing it in His hands, we unload the burden of care for it. By thanking Him for it, we embrace the possibilities He has for us in that day and relinquish our pride in taking credit for it.
Ephesians 4:29: “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.” Something that can hinder our dialogue with ourself is also our dialogue with others. Sometimes we can get caught up in grumbling and complaining and we don’t realize the effect we’re having on our environment. And it has an effect on our internal environment, besides just the people around us. This is where talking to ourselves kind of co-mingles with our speech in general. We find that we can’t really separate one from the other. We talk to ourselves, but we find that our internal dialogue must also line up with our day-to-day speech as well.
