While we are often of two minds about decisions that we make, once we’ve experienced the new birth, dealing with our fleshly nature and our renewed spirit brings in a new level of complexity. We have to make decisions when confronted with two possible options, and also decide between following either of our two natures. We learn that the struggle is not always easy, but that it becomes easier as we train ourselves to let our lives be dominated by our renewed spirit.
Romans 7:18: “For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.” Paul is wrestling here with his flesh. He sees the corrupt nature of it, but is wondering how to overcome it. In his early Christian life, he’s working out how to gain control over it—to put it under and be spirit led. All new believers experience this and can identify with it. It’s a constant struggle, and can seem overwhelming, until you learn to live a new life in Him, and that you have help in this as well.
James 1:18: “A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.” Double-mindedness is often underestimated in no other light, but in the negative result that it brings. The result of instability makes being double-minded an untenable position. You can not live successfully and be effective in this nether realm of indecision. If we are unstable, it makes us prone to every enemy we face. If we are indecisive, it prevents us from moving forward in any area of life. We get stuck in this muck of indecision, and like quicksand it tries to pull us under.
Galatians 2:20: “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.” Paul comes to a glorious revelation. He learns that his old man has died, and that through the power of Christ he now has the ability to live this new life in Him. The old man has died with Christ; the new man has been resurrected in Christ. It’s a life lived by our faith in Him.
Romans 12:2: “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” A new life also requires a new mind. If we continue to live with the old mind, we can’t move forward with the new. At odds with us on a daily basis is the thinking of the world. The thinking and thought processes of the world in which we live try to infect our own. They try to bring us to their level of thinking, but it takes a daily renewing of our mind to combat this process. And in this—when we are successful—we are able to fulfill the perfect will of God for our lives.
1 Corinthians 2:16: “For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.” We cannot instruct the mind of God but can only extract from the intents and purposes of His will. This mind—when we align it with ours—directs us toward the best possible outcome. The mind of Christ has been given to us through His word. This is a singleness of mind which we hadn’t experienced before. Far from being unstable, it’s entirely resolute. Far from indecisive, it’s brimming with intent. And it’s here where we see so clearly the destructive nature of double-mindedness, and experience the singleness of mind He meant for us all along.
