…Let’s go deeper—Do you need a written invitation?

What’s great about God is that He has both sent us a written invitation and also written things down for us. The whole of scripture is for our benefit and an invitation to come and dine. What we fail to recall from memory we can reference, and what we know is written down we can stand on by faith. We know that God watches over His word to perform it. We see the power of the written word active in our lives as we live it out on a daily basis.

Deuteronomy 30:19: “I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live:” God has made it plain in His word the choice we have before us. God is saying, “Take note of this—write this down. This choice is plainly set before you so that only you bear responsibility for the outcome. But let me help you make the right decision. Choose the path that I’ve shown you—the path of life.” God’s invitation to us couldn’t be more clear. His desire for us to live and His love for us is reflected in the invitation. And His love for us also means giving us the right to choose.

John 20:31: “But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.” The gospel of John states in this concluding verse of the 20th chapter why these things were written down. It’s a written record on which to base our belief that Jesus is the Christ—the Messiah. It’s our document to prove our sin debt was paid and absolved on the cross. It shows that, when we believe, we own the rightful inheritance of eternal life.

Matthew 11:28: “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Jesus’ invitation here is to all who work in the vineyard. He compels us to come to Him for rest as we labor for Him doing the specific work He has called us to do. It’s an open invite to all who bear the label of ‘Laborer in Christ’. The work, while rewarding, has a taxing effect on even the strongest of laborers. But the load wasn’t meant to be carried alone. Through prayer, and communion with Him, we unload our weary shoulders and relieve ourselves of the load so that we might return to the field again.

Hebrews 4:12: “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” This written word also has a living impact on us. As a two-edged sword it cuts in-two truth from error. It shows what we say we believe vs. what we really believe. It doesn’t just show what we do, but why we do it. It reveals our motives sometimes before we realize the motives ourselves. As the marrow resides in the bone, so the spirit resides in the soul. It shows us what is flesh and what is spirit. It reveals the two natures—as the Apostle Paul stated—that war inside us once we experience the new birth. It brings to light that which was hidden. It shows what we might be able to hide from ourselves, and others, but can never hide from God.

2 Timothy 3:16: “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:” The all-encompassing profitability of His written word is simply stated in this one verse—the purpose and the benefits. He wrote it all down for us so that we might know—and once we know—enact the instructions therein. As we read His word, we become more aligned with Him as we reflect His heart through our actions. As we move in response to what He’s written, we can thank Him that He wrote it all down for us, and that He has sent us a written invitation.
