Romans 6:18: “Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.” Once freed from sin, we now have a new master. We are no longer slaves to sin, but servants of righteousness. This is much better. For it was never a matter of whether we were going to serve something, but only of who we were going to serve. Sin keeps us in bondage more than it ever lets on; God gives us more freedom than we ever thought possible. The choices aren’t hard, but we make them hard when we just cling to what we’ve always known.
John 8:36: “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.” Our freedom is no way in doubt once we’ve been freed by Him; our only question is whether we’re going to live and walk in it. The fear of what’s ahead can make us look back thinking what we used to know looks pretty good. But we’re not thinking clearly. Fear will always keep us bound in the past in the face of an uncertain future. But when that future is founded in Him we have every reason to embrace our freedom.
