ABL (Always Be Learning)

I don’t know, I think I may have just made up that acronym. Maybe it’s a variation on ABC (Always Be Closing). That’s the mantra for anyone in sales to remember. So if you’re in sales, remember that one. Nevertheless, it’s important to remember. It’s important to never stop learning. We can’t continue progressing if we don’t continue learning.

The really ‘stand out’ moment in learning, I think, is when you really come to the realization about just how much there is to learn. I remember in the movie—from way back in the day—“Armageddon”, the character who is played by Bruce Willis, Harry Stamper. He was the oil drilling expert who gets commissioned by the federal government to help save the world from an enormous asteroid that is hurtling toward the Earth, which will lead to its imminent destruction. He and his reckless group of misfits get roped into becoming ‘off the cuff’ astronauts in order to go into space and, hopefully, blow up this monstrous object. They need somebody who’s the best oil well driller on the planet. They find out it’s him, much to their chagrin. For whatever virtues he possesses in oil well drilling, he certainly lacks them in other areas. Anyway, in the beginning of the movie when they are trying to convince him to help in this ‘save the world’ endeavor, he makes a compelling statement. He says to this guy pleading for his help, “I’ve been drilling my entire life and I still don’t know all there is to know about drilling.” For whatever lack of humility this character possess in general, this statement displayed a surprising amount of humility to me. Even this guy had come to the realization that there was a lot to learn on the subject. And that was just on this one subject. Think of that. You can study one small little subject your entire life and still not plumb the entire depths of it. Oh…you were wondering how “Armageddon” ends? Well, they get in a couple space shuttles, drill a hole in the asteroid, implant a nuclear bomb in it, detonate it, and all escape, mostly, to the safety of planet Earth. Yeah, Harry Stamper didn’t quite make it. Spoiler alert! Which, maybe I can’t say that on a movie from…I don’t know…circa 1998.

Anyway, you could say this was a teachable moment. That’s right, we can even learn things from such mind-numbing Hollywood fare. What I learned from Harry Stamper’s statement was something that I could apply to the rest of my life. In whatever area of life, I should never stop learning. And especially in those areas where I want to achieve an expert status, or excel, I should keep gaining new knowledge throughout my life. As much as you think you know, you can always know more. So remember, ABL (Always Be Learning). Not sure if that’s really ever gonna catch on…but I tried.

If you want to go into the deeper waters, build a bigger boat

It’s generally understood that you have to be prepared for any meaningful endeavor you want to undertake. There comes a point where you have to decide to move forward, and then you make preparations to do so. This is the case with anyone who goes to college to prepare for a career—they are building a bigger boat. They are building a broader base of knowledge and understanding so that they can go out and excel in the real world (the deep waters).

When you think about ships, and what they have to endure, you don’t just go out onto the high seas with a little skiff. No, you prepare and make sure you can withstand an overseas journey by building a bigger boat. If you fail to build a bigger boat, you can quickly find yourself in the situation where you are in over your head. Now the water is coming in over the edges because you didn’t prepare. And that’s what anyone does when they want to be the best at what they do. They become prepared to do that. That’s why doctors and lawyers go to school for eight years. They know they can’t go out into their respective fields without preparing.

Much of this goes without saying. But how often do we think about the reality of it in practical terms. There aren’t always signs along the way telling us we’re not prepared for what we’re about to get involved in. That’s why you have to know that and figure it out ahead of time. The person who is in the worst condition in this world is the one who doesn’t know what he doesn’t know. If you know you have a lot of preparation to do, then that’s at least a start. That person at least knows what they don’t know. It’s the woefully uninformed person that can unwittingly march off and get himself into trouble quickly. Having a strong grasp on those areas where you might be lacking understanding is how you build yourself a bigger ship.

Sometimes it’s not until you get into it that you understand just how big a ship you need. But that can be a good thing. For now you grasp the reality of the situation. Maybe it’s a wakeup call, in a sense. Now you know the work involved. And now, you can apply yourself to the degree required in order to get the job done. Another thing this can do is dispel fear. You tend to be less fearful when you know you are ready for the situation at hand. A big ship can take on bigger waves than a little one. Now that you have a bigger ship you can say, “Bring on the deeper waters, I’m ready.”

Pride comes in many forms

What’s traditionally seen as pride might only cover one aspect of it. Pride can actually come in many forms. That’s why it can be difficult to spot sometimes. I guess you could say there is ‘obvious’ pride and sometimes there is ‘subtle’ pride.

The pride we usually recognize are the things that stand out right away. Other kinds of pride can be harder to see. The pride a person might take in their wealth would easily come to mind and you could identify it right away. But the pride someone has in being frugal is a little more difficult to recognize. Or, maybe, we are just hesitant to label it as pride. Someone may brag that they have a fifteen bedroom house with a 5 stall garage, besides the house they already have at the lake, and you immediately think, “You prideful, arrogant, condescending (and whatever other words you want to throw in there—let’s keep it clean people)”. That would describe most of our immediate reactions.

But consider the person who lives a simple lifestyle. They don’t talk about their wealth—well, because they don’t have it. But, instead, they talk about how they always buy the most reasonably priced products, they clip coupons, they always look for the best bargains, and they drive across town to save a nickel on a gallon of gas (not sure this last one is all that worthwhile). They could even talk about how they don’t need all those amenities and extravagant lifestyle, which they probably don’t. They actually take great pride in their frugality. Anyway, this person could, conceivably, be just as prideful as the rich person. It’s just a matter of what they are prideful about. That’s fine if they want to live a simple lifestyle. But it’s just their attitude about their frugality that is the issue. The same goes for the rich person. There’s nothing wrong with being rich, in itself. But it’s their attitude about being rich.
People suffering from diabetes cialis generico mastercard and obesity should also take care with anti-impotency drug. This Sildenafil citrate is not found in the market to search for generic viagra purchase for female sexual enhancement, you will come across pills, supplements, lotions, creams and gels. In addition to the local newspapers and best buy viagra magazines, you can refer to the online thyroid support groups. A lot of people choose the medication approach which, at first, may seem to be generico cialis on line the easier route.

If you want to get to the mother of all contradictions, here it is: consider the person who is so sure they aren’t prideful—they are so sure that they aren’t prideful that they want everyone to know how prideful they aren’t. They make a great display of how lowly, and meek, and self-sacrificing they are, which is hard to do—I have to say. Of course, this person is none of those things. They just want you to think that they are. In other words, they take great pride in their humility. I’m not sure how that works, exactly.

The reality is, pride isn’t always a reflection of what you do, but your attitude in doing those things. If you want to run a system check for pride, then check your heart first. Check your motives. Then, if you can be honest with yourself to get to the truth, and you can tell yourself that you’re not trying to impress anyone, then you’re not guilty of pride. At least, not that I can tell.

Right data; wrong conclusions

I recently finished reading this book. The book was written based upon a large amount of research the author had conducted on a certain segment of our society. It was meant to find out the reasons these people are what they were, and how they got there. I hesitate to name the author, or the topic of study, so as not to incriminate him or his work, but it was interesting the conclusions he had come to, based upon his research.

As I was reading through this book, I found myself thinking about the conclusions this author had drawn—examining them in my mind. I found that, much of the time, and in my honest opinion, his conclusions were flawed. It amounted to me sitting there with a grimace on my face, and a figurative shaking of my head in disagreement. I know this begs the question, and you might be asking, ‘Then why did you even read it”? Well, that’s a legitimate question. I guess my answer is kind of complicated. If I were to be honest, I’m something of a contrarian thinker by nature. I like to examine thoughts and see if they mesh with reality. Now, I don’t do that at the expense of the facts, but I do tend to do that. You might think I’m something of a ‘logic snob’. OK, I guess I’m guilty. But even more than that, there’s something that bothers me about people who present ideas as novel conclusions when they’re not even that novel, and worse—they’re just plain wrong. And I think they need to be called on it, but often aren’t. On the upside, there were some entertaining aspects of the book, so I guess that’s why I kept reading.

But, regardless, this also brought up another question in my mind: How often does someone have all the facts in front of them, but they still come to the wrong conclusions? All the facts can be accurate and true, but they still incorrectly discern the facts on the subject. This can easily happen if one’s not careful. For instance, there’s a logical fallacy known as ‘post hoc ergo propter hoc’. It’s Latin, and what it literally means is ‘after this, therefore because of this’. It’s saying that because one event happened after another event that the former even must be the cause. Of course, we all know that isn’t always the case. Some things happen in sequence with other events, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they have anything to do with the other. A young kid could come to the false conclusion that his Dad impacts the setting of the sun. This is all based on his observation that the sun always goes down right after his Dad comes home from work and shuts the garage door. He thinks, “Well, the sun always sets after Dad comes home. Dad must cause the setting of the sun. Case closed.” Well, not so fast, junior. You might be surprised to learn that one thing has nothing to do with the other.

Of course we can forgive this youngster for coming to the wrong conclusions on something like this, for many reasons. One, being that he is too young to know better. The other, of course, is the elevated status of his Father in his mind. But one wonders how often we come to the same kinds of wrong conclusions. And, as adults, what’s our excuse? We should be above this kind of thinking, but sometimes aren’t. Maybe we need to take a closer look. Maybe we need to re-examine the data.

Platforms of influence

Of all the power we have as individuals, one of those powers is to influence others, and to influence them in a positive way. That’s something we can easily take for granted, or overlook. Opportunities to make a positive impact on someone’s life should be embraced, and they don’t always come around twice.

One thing that we don’t always see is that we all have a ‘platform’ of influence. When we think of someone who has a platform to influence people, we like to think of presidents, CEO’s, or head football coaches, but we don’t usually think of ourselves. That’s where we would be wrong. No matter how small, we are all in a position to influence somebody. Of course, it’s also a double-edged sword. We can influence them for good or for bad. And, interestingly, we have the power to influence some people that we thought could care less about what we think. They might send off this vibe that they aren’t concerned with any of our opinions. However, sometimes…..just sometimes these same people are the ones that are watching us the closest. We might think that certain individuals would never listen to what we have to say about anything, but you might be surprised. That’s why we should never sell ourselves short in thinking we don’t have a platform to influence anybody.

So what are some of these platforms? Well, they can be as simple as the platform a father or mother to direct their children. Or you might have a platform as a mid-level manager in a company. Maybe you own a small business with a few employees—that’s a platform. But even if you don’t have a small-time leadership position, you still have a platform. You have a platform even if you are just a fellow employee at your workplace. You still have the power to influence them in a positive way.

If you think of the famous Dale Carnegie (he wrote the book, “How To Win Friends and Influence People”), he didn’t just write his book for people in leadership positions. His book was for everybody. Sometimes people make the joke, in reference to a person really lacking in people skills, “Boy, he could really benefit from a Dale Carnegie course”. That very well may be. However, you could just short-cut that route and influence them yourself. You could become their own living and breathing ‘Dale Carnegie course’. Just a thought.

Anyway, regardless of our platform, we all have one. It’s a just a matter of how we use it. It can even be in the most subtle ways. Our positive tone and demeanor has an impact without us even realizing it. People can feed off of your energy. You may have made their day a little brighter just because you’re there. They may not even admit it, and probably won’t. But if someone were to ask them in secret what they thought of you, they would have to admit that they’re glad you’re there, and that you used your ‘platform’ to influence them.

What’s it mean to be a moderate?

It’s something of a general understanding that a moderate stance on something is usually the most even handed, or the most reasonable approach. I think, because of this, it’s also assumed that the moderate is the one who is closest to the truth. However, finding a general consensus on an issue doesn’t necessarily mean the truth has been located. It just means that an agreement by the majority of people has been reached. As we know, opinions change over time. And the opinions of 50 years ago aren’t the same as those of today.

‘Moderate’ just means you are in the bulk of the mean average of opinions in the general population. Knowing some of our society’s generally accepted opinions, that’s not necessarily a compliment. But I think we make a mistake when we start to think of moderation and truth as being synonymous. Truth is usually somewhere on the spectrum, but it’s not always in the middle.

When you think in military policy terms, there are two ends of the spectrum: the hawk and the dove. A hawk is one who has the most proactive stance when it comes to military engagement around the world. The dove is the one more inclined to hold back from a war, and will be the arbiter of peace at all costs. Neither one is necessarily right. It can depend on the situation. But a stance, as a whole, can be wrong. It’s not necessarily whether you are a hawk or a dove, but your rules of engagement that determine the point at which you are willing to fight for something. Interestingly enough, this also has a dual application in our discussion. The point at which you are willing to make a stand should be at the point of truth. Some may label you an extremist if you stand for truth. But it doesn’t necessarily make it any less true. All it means is that most people don’t like it.

There’s a famous quote that Barry Goldwater made at the 1964 Republican Convention. He said, “Extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice; Moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue.” We sometimes are tempted to compromise our principles for the sake of peace. It’s the ‘go along just to get along’ type of thinking. Some in our political world seem to have married themselves to this idea. And that’s fine as long as it’s advancing towards an admirable goal. But I think we need to ask ourselves some important questions first: Am I compromising my core principles in order to go along with this? Is this working towards a goal that I could never come to terms with? Am I going along with this just to curry favor with the other side? If ‘Yes’, then maybe we need to hold off. Maybe that’s the point we need to stand firm and say, “No further.” Maybe we don’t want to be labeled a ‘moderate’ anyway. And maybe being labeled an ‘extremist’ is OK as long as it involves taking a stand for truth.

So many religions…which one is right?

With so many religions in the world, how do you know which one is right? It’s a fair question. In the presence of many options, confusion abounds. Some may suggest that there are none that are right, because all are right. It’s a mix-and-match smorgasbord, and you can choose whichever one you wish to be right. Some even combine religions and make a sort of hybrid of their own. But what we fail to realize is that many of these religious beliefs are in direct opposition to one another. Direct contradictions cannot exist within the same space for long. If you can be convinced that there are a set of spiritual laws governing everything, then you can be convinced that those laws are as absolute as the physical laws that govern our universe. There is only one set—they can’t all be right.

If we take the three major world religions, Islam, Judaism, and Christianity, we can begin to narrow things down a bit if we focus on just those. All three trace their roots back to the same place—Abraham. Islam, for instance, had its beginning with the prophet Muhammed. He claimed to have visits from the angel Gabriel. From these visions, was started the religion of Islam. While this religion had its beginning much later than the time of Abraham, much of its teaching can be traced back to this time. Abraham had two sons: Isaac and Ishmael. Ishmael was Abraham’s first son through the servant Hagar. Isaac was Abraham’s second son through his wife, Sara. Muslim’s believe it was Ishmael, not Isaac, who God told Abraham to sacrifice on the altar. Muslim’s also believe that Mohammed’s lineage can be traced directly back to Ishmael. But while it’s true that Ishmael was Abraham’s firstborn son, he wasn’t Abraham’s firstborn legitimate son—he wasn’t the son of Promise. Isaac was the son that God had promised Abraham. So, you could say, Islam had a bad beginning.

If we look at Judaism, it had the same beginning as Christianity. It all began with Abraham, Isaac, and his son, Jacob. Abraham would become the father of the Jewish people through Isaac, the son of Promise. Christianity and Judaism track along the same path for about 2,000 years. Many of the Jewish traditions and teachings come from this time period. We get the 10 commandments, through Moses, from Mount Sinai. The Jewish feasts and Passover come from this time in Jewish history. And for years there were prophecies of the coming Messiah by the prophets, i.e. He would be born in Bethlehem, that He would die for the sins of the world, that He would bring a new Covenant. All of which were fulfilled in the birth, life, and death of Jesus. And Jesus’ lineage goes back all the way to Abraham, through Isaac, as the prophecies foretold it would. But the Jews rejected the Messiah. And this is where Christianity parts ways with Judaism.

Christianity, as it has for the last 2000 years, has one more important distinction. All other religions are just that—religions. See, religion is always man’s attempt to reach God. Man does this in various ways, through keeping of rules, laws, the working in some way to become good enough. Christianity, the Gospel message, differs in that it’s not the attempt of man to reach God, but God reaching down to man. God knew we could never do enough on our own to get to Him. So He bridged the gap. He did that through Jesus, His son. The sacrifice of Him on the cross was in our stead. He paid the price for our sin. That’s what makes it unique—that’s what makes it right.

Enemies attack when you’re at your weakest

It’s pretty much universally accepted that an enemy doesn’t choose to attack you when you’re at your height of strength. They will want to be strategic about their attack, and much of that strategy involves their analysis of your strength. We don’t always realize when we’re at our weakest. Sometimes our enemies realize it before we do. That’s why it’s so important to pay attention to our own defenses. If we’re not vigilant about keeping our defenses strong, then we’ll be overwhelmed before we know it.

I’ve noticed that the times when I usually get sick are the times when I am usually at my weakest. My defenses are worn down—meaning my immune system. I’ve had a lot of stress or difficulties to the point where I am now using up a lot of resources to function. As a result, viruses and infections now have an open door—or a weakened door—so that they can now barge right in. An infection can’t win against a strong immune system. That’s why we take Vitamin C, and try to eat right, and get enough sleep. It’s supposed to keep us strong and, as a result, our defenses strong.

We can see in history that often times enemies didn’t attack their opponent until the timing was right. In order to minimize losses and maximize their chances for success they attacked when they had the greatest chance of taking their enemy. They were waiting for their enemy to get worn out. That was the case with ancient Rome. The Roman Empire fell from without before it ever fell from within. The Barbarians may have wanted to attack for a long time, but they never had the guts, or the initiative to do it, until the Empire was already too weak to defend itself. The Roman Empire had the most powerful fighting force on the planet at the time. If Rome had kept its defenses strong, it would never have been able to be taken.

The power and steady onslaught of an attack can be overwhelming even in the best of times. It’s especially difficult when you’re all tired and rundown. That’s why keeping a conscious awareness of our strength levels is so important. We need to know when we’re getting weak before our enemy does.

One thing to realize: This isn’t always easy to do. We get distracted, we get busy, and our eyes get off of one thing and onto another. But if we are vigilant in this one area, it can keep us from encountering continual setbacks in our lives. Those areas where we repeatedly get tripped up can be overcome if we are vigilant in this. Sometimes we help our enemy without realizing it. And we help them by presenting them an already weakened opponent.

Getting mad at the darkness doesn’t change the fact that it’s still dark

I think sometimes cultural change can be difficult. It’s difficult because we don’t like to acknowledge why it’s changing, and we don’t want to address the change in the most constructive way. When it’s changing for the better, it’s easy. But when you see it heading down a dark road, it’s difficult not to set up roadblocks to prevent the journey from ever happening. Many times we’re trying to put an abrupt stop to the car, when maybe we should just sit and have an honest discussion with the driver.

Standing for truth is a worthy and admirable goal. It’s something that needs to be represented in our society, no matter what. But the way in which we do that can be just as important as the fact that we do it at all. I think it’s easy to forget that people don’t get an accurate picture of who you are when all they see is what you’re against. They need to know what you are for. In fact, it’s probably best to lead with that. Let people know the positive aspects and attributes that you represent. And sometimes when we do that, the things we are against don’t even have to be directly stated. They will be self-evident. Our statement of truth will automatically shine light on what is in direct opposition to it.

Engaging the culture can be a challenging thing. Honestly, it can sometimes be difficult to know how to address specific issues. But it’s always good to start with an extended hand, rather than with a drawn sword. Sometimes we try to implement change in the form of boycotts and protests, but we need to stop and think about whether this is having the desired effect that we want. We need to stop and think about whether this is representing us in the best way possible. We need to stop and think about how our anger at the darkness will shed any light on the situation.

One thing to ask when we see things going in the wrong direction is, “Am I engaging people in a positive way that they would listen to what I have to say? Have I earned enough of their respect that they will at least listen to me?” Some people have earned great respect within a community because the members of that community have seen the positive attributes that they stand for on display in that person’s life. Most people would listen to what they have to say. And it’s certainly not because everyone in that community agrees with them. But what they see—even though they might not understand it—is a paragon of truth. This respected person had a positive impact on their community. While he may not have been able to convince all, he was able to at least convince some. And he didn’t do it by shouting at the darkness—he did it by proclaiming the truth.

Playtime for adults

I’ve always wondered what it would be like to be an actor. I don’t know whether I would enjoy it or not, but I was just curious about it in the sense of wondering if I could do it. Anyway, It looks like a lot of fun. I don’t mean to denigrate actors, or their industry, but from my perspective it looks like a sort of ‘playtime for adults’. When you put it in perspective, they are pretending to be someone else on a make-believe movie set, and getting paid enormous sums to do it. When you think about it, that’s pretty much what we did as kids, minus the ‘getting paid enormous sums’ part. I suppose that’s why it’s hard for me to take actors seriously when they refer to their job as ‘working’. For me, it causes me to kind of snicker and roll my eyes.

To be fair, the movie industry isn’t the only one that appears to be nothing but fun. But maybe it’s just the most obvious example. It certainly looks like a lot of fun. Maybe I’m just jealous. I have looked at it from the perspective of the challenge that it is. It’s an intriguing question to me—to wonder if I would be able to convincingly act like someone else. I know what you’re thinking: I’m too genuine a person to be that phony. No seriously, that’s what you were thinking, right?

Well anyway, I always thought that being in the movies would be a lot of fun. Especially, movies based on comic books. It’s kind of like a tailor-made industry for people who never wanted to grow up. And now, thanks to movies, they don’t have to. They can go on playing pretend. The rest of us have to actually act like adults. But maybe we’re just acting too. Only we’re pretending to be adults instead of someone else. So, who are the real actors now? Hmmm?
