The Value of Being an Heir

I was thinking about the benefits of being an heir—an heir to a fortune, an heir to a throne, an heir to a legacy. There are a lot of advantages. And depending on who you are an heir to, the advantages are greater than some.

If you consider many wealthy in today’s age, the thinking has seemed to change. Probably 100 years ago wealthy parents would leave the bulk of their fortunes to their kids. The mindset has shifted somewhat from what it was. Several of the wealthy billionaires today have decided to only leave their children a minute amount of the fortunes they have accumulated. And even that comes with certain conditions. They only get the money if it’s for school, or buying a house, or a business start-up. Sometimes they only get the money once they reach a certain age. I can see the value in this way of thinking. They don’t want their children becoming trust fund babies. They don’t want to see them become dependent on their inheritance and being lazy with no goals or plans in life. And that can easily happen. It appears parents might be more aware of the dangers of wealth than in times past. Even some of the moderately wealthy people I’ve known seem to make a conscious effort to instill in their children a work ethic, and are cognizant of them being spoiled. It’s interesting, because some of the kids from less wealthy families may end up being more spoiled than the ones from wealthy families. Probably because the less wealthy are not as aware of the danger of it happening to them.

If you consider an heir to a throne, they not only get the benefits of an inheritance, they also inherit the responsibility of ruling the kingdom. So, it’s not all fun and games, there is a leadership role to step into. Ruling over a kingdom isn’t easy. Their decisions can impact countless lives. They can’t take on this role, though, until they have matured and grown up enough to realize the enormity of the task. They were raised and trained with the intent in mind that they would be given responsibilities one day. Then, one day, they will assume the role that has been waiting for them. Of course, the advantages are that they set the agenda and people have to listen to them.

While I’m not an heir to a large fortune or a kingdom, I feel I’ve inherited a legacy from my parents. I feel they prepared me for life in teaching me the value of hard work, treating people right, and a belief and faith in God. These are valuable things. It was something that they began and can be passed down to each generation. Maybe the legacy is the most important part. For that has the value of being a part of forming you into the person you become.

AV Romans 8:16-17 says, “The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with [him], that we may be also glorified together.” As believers we have an inheritance waiting for us in Heaven. It’s more valuable than any inheritance we could receive here on earth. For we will inherit an eternity with Him. This doesn’t just happen, though. Like any other inheritance, we have to be prepared to receive it.

AV 2 Timothy 2:11-13 says, “[It is] a faithful saying: For if we be dead with [him], we shall also live with [him]: If we suffer, we shall also reign with [him]: if we deny [him], he also will deny us: If we believe not, [yet] he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself.” When we were saved the old man died. The new man now lives a life in Him. As we die daily to ourselves, we suffer. These daily sufferings prepare us to reign with Him someday.

AV Galatians 4:5-7, “To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.” Once we’re saved we are adopted into the family of God. We have a knowing in our hearts that He is our Father. This says we are no longer servants, but sons.

AV 1 John 3:1 says, “Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.” It’s an amazing thing to think that God’s love involves Him calling us sons and daughters of God. He has, though. That not only involves a great reward, but a great responsibility. There will be sacrifices we have to make. But God has prepared for us a great reward. We are heirs and joint-heirs with Christ Jesus. What an amazing thing!

AV Romans 8:16-17 says, “The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with [him], that we may be also glorified together.”

Stop interrupting me!

No, I wasn’t talking to you. That’s just what I feel like saying sometimes to people when they start talking over me. Of all the things people do that would qualify as bad manners, that one ranks near the top with me. There are a couple reasons. First, it throws me off from what I want to say. Second, it makes it seem like they don’t care what you have to say. Which, maybe they don’t, but that’s beside the point.

This is one area where I’ve had to work on my patience in dealing with other people. Honestly, I think most of the time they don’t realize they’re doing it. It’s just the way they go about the give and take in a normal conversation. I make a strong effort to not interrupt people. So, I get frustrated easily when some people start talking and then never quit. There’s really no place for me to respond. I end up thinking, “Is my presence really required for this conversation? Because you seem to be doing fine on your own.” I sometimes wonder if they would even notice if I left. Maybe that’s why so many people interrupt in conversation, though. Maybe they think that there won’t be a place for them to interject. So, they just create one. I guess that’s one way to look at it.

For the most part, though, it seems like it’s just become accepted practice. I have to try hard not to respond in a negative manner and shout out the title of this post. But that would probably be worse than the actual interruption. And the award for bad manners—Me! So, maybe I don’t want to do that. I suppose I could think of a subtle way to point out when people are interrupting. The thing is, I just don’t want to be conniving. Subterfuge is usually not the best way to influence people.

I do think that this displays a fundamental problem in our society. We’re usually so busy saying what we want to say that we don’t take the time to listen to other people. Listening seems like it’s becoming a lost art. The reality is, we can learn a lot more from listening than talking. The reason why is because anything we’re saying is all stuff we already know. I know you’re probably thinking, “Thanks Captain Obvious.” Yeah, you’re welcome. It’s true though. Someone else might have valuable information that we could learn something from. Or, it’s entirely possible they could just be spouting off a bunch of meaningless drivel. In either case, though, we should be courteous and listen to what they have to say. People value good listeners, if nothing else. I know at least it’s one area where I could grow and mature personally. So, next time you’re talking to me I promise I won’t interrupt. But just make sure you keep it interesting.

…Let’s go deeper

What does the Bible say about this topic? Well, Philippians has some good things to say. AV Philippians 2:3 says “[Let] nothing [be done] through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.” I believe this is where we need to start on this subject—with this mindset. We need to make sure we’re putting other people first. Sometimes our need to speak is really rooted in the ‘strife and vainglory’ mentioned here. Our approach should be one of humility when listening to the voice of others.

AV Proverbs 18:13 says, “He that answereth a matter before he heareth [it], it [is] folly and shame unto him.” You didn’t know the Bible directly addressed this topic did you. Yet it does tell us to hear out the other person before we give a response. It’s always a good idea. For many reasons. We can be assuming that we know what they’re going to say. But maybe we don’t. Maybe there was more to it. I believe when hear someone else out we are displaying wisdom and maturity.

Also in AV Proverbs 19:20: “Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayest be wise in thy latter end.” This is especially true when we are receiving instruction. We can’t learn from someone else’s words if we’re not listening. Listening provides room for us to gain wisdom.

It has provoked a hope in the midst of all this male thing, our hair starts to drop out cialis generic canada thought about that and, almost without exception, we start to go bald. My hunger for sex is increasing viagra 100mg sales robertrobb.com day by day. One of the best and safest ways levitra properien to combat this issue is by using a legitimate and licensed online pharmacy, you can enjoy a host of advantages. AV James 1:19 says, “Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:” James describes for us here that listening needs to be our first priority. We need to be ready to hear. Not anxious to speak and possibly interrupt. Also, ultimately, we need to not fly off the handle if we get interrupted. I’m speaking to me here.

I also was thinking about this. I wonder how many times God might be speaking to us, but maybe we’re not listening, or maybe we’re “interrupting” Him in ways we don’t realize. AV Job 33:14-15 says, “For God speaketh once, yea twice, [yet man] perceiveth it not. In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falleth upon men, in slumberings upon the bed;” Here Job describes God speaking to us. And many times we may not perceive it. God may speak to us multiple times and in different ways. He may use dreams or some other means to tell us something. Yet if we’re not attentive and listening we may miss it.

Listening to others and making sure they’re being heard is important. Of ultimate importance, though, is making sure that we’re listening to what God is speaking to us. He has important things to tell us. We just need to make sure we’re not interrupting Him.

Philippians 2:3 says “[Let] nothing [be done] through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.”

AV Proverbs 18:13 says, “He that answereth a matter before he heareth [it], it [is] folly and shame unto him.”

AV Proverbs 19:20: “Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayest be wise in thy latter end.”

AV James 1:19 says, “Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:”

AV Job 33:14 says, “For God speaketh once, yea twice, [yet man] perceiveth it not. In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falleth upon men, in slumberings upon the bed;”

Don’t settle!

Don’t settle for less than the best. What do I mean by that? Well, what I really mean is don’t settle for less than the best for you. There are several reasons I believe this this to be true.

One of the big reasons we shouldn’t settle for less is because we won’t end up being satisfied. We’ll be regretful. I believe if we make a purchase, or make a choice knowing that we could have done better, we’ll always walk away disappointed. That’s a recipe for a milk toast existence.

Also, when we settle, it leaves us not striving for the best outcomes. When we stop striving for the best outcomes we stop moving forward in life. This is why every time an athlete steps out on the court, or on the field, they have to give their best effort. Otherwise, they might never win. Winning isn’t the only important thing. But moving forward is important. Winning is just one measure by which we can tell if we’re moving forward. No matter how good we are, we can still get better. Imagine if a coach said to just go out there and just do “good enough”. That would be pretty absurd. A coach’s jobs is to get you to give your best effort.

When a new business is started, they’re always planning and building for growth. If a new business is started it’s never with the intent of having only just enough business, or just a good enough product, or just good enough customer service. If you’ve ever read a company’s mission statement it always aspires to be something more and to achieve the highest ideals. It’s certainly true for companies that are publicly traded on the stock exchange. Shareholders have a way of holding them to the goals they strive to achieve. Every 90 days they have to put out an earnings report and investors find out whether or not they are measuring up to those goals. Investors don’t invest in a company because they think it’s just good enough. Companies, like many things, end up dying if they’re not moving forward, expanding, and reaching new goals. It’s the striving for excellence that propels them forward.

Just getting by doesn’t usually produce attractive outcomes. We generally don’t think about it that way, though. We can easily get trapped in a ‘just get by’ way of thinking. One major reason is fear. It can take courage to strive for something more and set goals that might challenge us. In fact, I wouldn’t say that failure is the enemy of success—mediocrity is. A goal to achieve success will inevitably involve failure at some point. So, it’s about having the courage to move forward and not being afraid of failure.

We should also not settle for less than our best effort in whatever task we undertake.

The best version of your life is God’s will for you. He created you to live a good life, striving for a higher level of life in Him. And, also, shaping you into something more than you ever realized you could be.

AV John 10:10 says, “The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have [it] more abundantly.” God has made it clear in His word that He wants to give us a greater life than we could have by ourselves. The highest level of life is in knowing Him and living a life according to His word. Jesus’ death on the cross was the way He has provided that life for us.

Moreover, go with Kamagra order to order cialis super viagra as per your requirement. Keeping His word ever before us helps us to achieve the life He has for us. AV Joshua 1:8 says, “This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.” God’s word not only keeps us on the right path, but provides a way for us to produce the best outcomes in our lives. Following it not only protects us, but keeps us pointed in the right direction towards a better life. The one He has planned for us.

AV Jeremiah 29:11 says, “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.” The plans God has for us are meant with a future, and an end, that God has in mind for us. The plan may not always make sense to us. But part of striving and moving forward towards success involves just trusting that He knows what He’s doing.

AV Proverbs 3:5 says, “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.” So much of achieving all that God has for us involves just trusting Him. We can’t move forward in Him if we don’t trust Him. This is a process. But eventually, we grow and learn to trust Him and His way of doing things.

AV Psalms 31:14-15 says, “But I trusted in thee, O LORD: I said, Thou [art] my God. My times [are] in thy hand: deliver me from the hand of mine enemies, and from them that persecute me.” What I like about these verses is it reflects a person who has learned to trust God. He says, “My times are in thy hand.” He’s saying that God has his future in His hands, and that’s just the way he likes it.

God guiding us and directing us towards the life He has for us is the best place we can be. He knows the best path for us to take and how to get to the end result. We’re settling when we allow anything less in our lives.

AV John 10:10 says, “The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have [it] more abundantly.”

AV Joshua 1:8 says, “This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.”

AV Jeremiah 29:11 says, “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.”

AV Proverbs 3:5 says, “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.”

AV Psalms 31:14-15 says, “But I trusted in thee, O LORD: I said, Thou [art] my God. My times [are] in thy hand: deliver me from the hand of mine enemies, and from them that persecute me.”

Selfish and Unselfish Desires

We all have desires. Some are selfish and some are unselfish. I would venture to guess that we all have some of both. Have you ever thought about how many you have of each?

I have wondered before how many of my own desires are truly selfless. I have also wondered how many of them are selfish. Unfortunately, I’m concerned there may be more of the latter than I care to admit. The good news is that as we get older we tend to approach things from a little less selfish perspective. We eventually come to the understanding that we’re not the only people on the planet, and that we might have to share some of the earth’s resources with other people. When we’re kids our selfishness is on display in its most unfiltered manner.

As we get older we might have siblings introduced into the mix. And these are the ones we usually have to learn to share with first. Fighting over food and toys only goes so far before mom and dad get involved. ‘Share’ isn’t the first word we speak on our own. It’s usually ‘mine’. The word ‘share’ we need to be taught. The word ‘mine’ just comes naturally. But slowly these selfish ways are chipped away until we mature through learning better ways.

When we are old enough to leave the nest it’s usually not too long before many of us get married. Here we take our selflessness to another level. We can no longer think just about what we want to do, or where we want to go. Wherever you’re going, you’re going there together. There’s now someone else involved. And they’re travelling down the same path with you. Similar to two people on a tandem bike. Things like ‘compromise’ and ‘sacrifice’ are words of which you gain a new level of understanding.

I would guess our own selfish behavior really gets checked when we have kids of our own. That’s when I think it really hits a person that they might have to do some things that require a sacrifice on their part. This is also when some of our unselfish desires end up being put into action. Providing for their needs at the expense of your own. This is where our selfishness runs into a brick wall. Here, sometimes ‘selfish’ is no longer an option and ‘selfless’ is the only path to take. You gladly take it, though, for your kids’ sake.

These are the progressions we go through. We don’t learn this all at once. The things we discover, though, are not only the need to be selfless, but the value there is in it. Much of this happens without us realizing it. The maturity comes, though, slowly over time and through experience. We come to know and understand what it means to be unselfish.

…Let’s go deeper

When we become Christians we find out, that when it comes to selflessness, we had just been playing in the minor leagues before. Making a commitment to Christ was going to take on a whole new level of selflessness. We thought we were being selfless before, but now, this was something entirely different.

AV James 4:2 says, “Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.” James really calls us out here. He illustrates our tendency towards selfish ways. It really shows us how we try to get things the wrong way and we end up disappointed. And, ultimately, we don’t get the things we really want because we don’t ask God, or we ask Him for the wrong reasons.

AV John 12:24 says, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.” What is Jesus describing here? Well, what He’s really talking about is us dying to ourselves. Dying to our selfish ways and also to our sinful flesh. He’s saying if that grain of wheat doesn’t die, then that’s all it will ever be is a grain of wheat. But if it chooses to die to itself, now it can bring forth fruit in the same manner as a stalk of wheat.

AV Matthew 16:24 says, “Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any [man] will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.” Jesus is reiterating the same idea here. Only, this describes the sacrifice involved in dying to ourselves. He’s showing for us that there is a sacrifice involved in following Him. He’s using a metaphor again. This time relating our sacrifice to His ultimate sacrifice and death on the Cross.

How do we do this though? How do we live the right way and deny our selfish desires at the same time? Well, this verse in Galatians describes it for us. AV Galatians 5:16 says, “[This] I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.” When we experience the new birth, God gives us a new heart. This new heart is the Spirit of God living inside of us. We now can live according to this new heart instead of our old sinful flesh. Hereby, we walk in the ways God has planned for us.

Finally it says in AV Psalms 37:4: “Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.” When our delight is in Him and not the things of this world, He will not only give us our true desires, but fill our heart with His desires. We abide in Him and He abides in us.

AV James 4:2 says, “Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.”

AV John 12:24 says, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.”

AV Matthew 16:24 says, “Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any [man] will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.”

AV Galatians 5:16 says, “[This] I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.”

AV Psalms 37:4: “Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.”

Don’t worry, be happy

How much time do you suppose we spend worrying about things? I would venture to guess that we might spend more time on it than we think. And some of us may be so used to worry that we may not realize we’re even doing it.

Worry is one of those things that sneaks into our lives without us realizing it. Some of us are so used to worry that when we run out of something to worry about we think something’s wrong. So, then our mind goes looking for new worries. But why do we worry? Is it even productive? What is the value in it? I was reading some last night about anxiety and fear. Because, really, worry is anxiety and anxiety is rooted in fear. What I was reading said that fear and stress will cause your adrenal glands to give off large amounts of adrenaline. This saps your energy levels and, as a result, reduces your ability to deal with stress. This can affect your body’s immune system and ability to repair itself. Apparently, our kidneys and adrenals are also connected. So, fear affects the kidneys as well. And kidneys affect brain function. So, prolonged stress can have an effect on memory. The good news is, though, that we can restore balance to the kidneys and adrenals by avoiding stressful situations and changing our reactions to them. We can thereby preserve our health of both our bodies and minds. Interesting!

That’s just how it affects us biologically, though. Of course there are emotional and spiritual aspects as well. But knowing now the damaging effects of worry, it should make us more aware and wanting to guard against it. I think when we really examine the reasons why we worry, we can conclude that it’s an exercise in futility. The reality is, how many of the things you worry about do you have the power to change? Really, we have only so much power as human beings. If you think about it, if you could have changed anything about the situation, you most likely would have already done it. So, since you can’t change it, then why worry about it? It really ends up being wasted energy. And knowing the harmful effects of it, harmful energy.

I’ve found myself in times past worrying about things. Sadly, it became a way of life for me. I’d worry about things that didn’t even really make sense to worry about. Worry is kind of like a dog chasing its own tail. It never gets you anywhere. You’ve probably heard that something like 90 percent of the things we worry about never happen. I’d say it’s pretty accurate. But maybe this can give us a clearer picture of how much energy we’re wasting and how harmful it is. And even if they do happen worry won’t help it. If it happens, you just deal with it when it comes.

…Let’s go deeper

AV Philippians 4:6 says, “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.” This is a popular verse, but a good one. God doesn’t want us to worry. Why? Because then we’re not trusting Him. God says not to be full of care for anything. Then he tells us how to deal with things we might have a tendency to worry about. He wants us to bring everything to Him in prayer, with thanksgiving. So, what do we do then? We leave it there and stop worrying. It’s His to deal with. You don’t have to worry anymore.

AV Mattew 6:25-27 says, “Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?” The needs of this life are easy to worry about at times. These are the basic needs of life. But Jesus puts this in proper perspective for us. He shows us how God willingly takes care of the fowls of the air. Aren’t we more important than them? But He also shows us how futile it is to worry anyway. See, we can’t add anything to our lives by worrying.

Further down in AV Matthew 6:33 it says, “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” Again Jesus refocuses us on where we should be looking. He says to seek first God’s kingdom and His righteousness and He will take care of these things.

The real harm in worrying is that it shows that we’re not trusting in God. We’re unwittingly trying to take control over something that we can’t control. We might as well give it to God. He has the power to do something with it. He can change that situation if you just ask Him, and leave it in His hands.

AV Philippians 4:6 says, “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.”

AV Mattew 6:25-27 says, “Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. AV Matthew 6:33 it says, “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”

Why is calamity happening to me?

Have you ever wondered why certain things happen the way they do? You may have a series of bad event happen in your life. Or, you may have a series of the same bad events happen in your life.

Have you ever been late for work and it seems like you hit every red light on the way there? Then on the days when you’re not late it seems like the lights willingly turn green for you. These are frustrating things for sure. I understand that everything is not going to go your way all the time. The thing that’s hard to understand is how such a series of events can happen to make it seem like the world has a vendetta against you. You end up thinking, “What are the odds?” It’s like winning the lottery, only in reverse.

I recently had my mirror broken off of my car while parked in front of my house. That wouldn’t be so bad except for the fact that it’s the third time it’s happened since I’ve lived here. Granted, it is a narrow street, and there’s only parking on one side of it. Sometimes it’s a tight fit for two cars to get through. Now, I don’t believe it’s on purpose, or that someone has it in for me. Other people end up folding their mirrors in on my street in order to avoid the same fate. Something that, until now, I have been reluctant to do. Even still, I marvel at the precision driving they must be capable of to drive by my car and clip my mirror without plowing into it altogether. I don’t know, maybe their ex-Hollywood stunt drivers.

These things make us marvel sometimes. It just doesn’t seem possible that these things should happen, on their own, in the course of a normal day. Even little things that happen can cause frustration. Like getting a phone call right as you’re about to fall asleep. And it’s even worse when you can’t get to sleep after that.

Some days the way things happen make you wonder about your odds of getting struck by a comet and lightning on the same day. How do these things just happen? I have some air travel stories that, I’m sure, would put many others to shame. The tendency is to think that someone has it in for you. You want to think maybe the airline is out to get me. Or, maybe bad customer service is their goal. No, I know that they’re trying the best they can. They have their own calamity to deal with. They can’t change the weather, or help random mechanical issues.

Sometimes it’s easy to think that events are conspiring against you. Most of the time, however, I’m sure these are just random things that happen. Even though they may seem odd or unusual, they’re just a part of us daily living our life.

…Let’s go deeper

While many of the negative events that happen in our lives just end up being a part of life, it’s important to remember that sometimes we do face resistance from the enemy. AV Ephesians 6:12 says, “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high [places].” It’s easy for us to forget sometimes that war is taking place in the spiritual realm. We need to remember the important battles we face are mostly spiritual battles.

AV James 5:16 says, “Confess [your] faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.” The Bible makes it clear the power that prayer has in our lives. This illustrates for us that ‘effectual, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much’. This means these are powerful prayers. We need to remember that we may not always see results right away. Sometimes there are battles taking place to resist our prayers manifesting.

In the book of Daniel it further talks about these battles that go on in the heavenlies. Daniel was a righteous man. An angel appeared before Daniel. In AV Daniel 10:12-13 it says, “Then said he unto me, Fear not, Daniel: for from the first day that thou didst set thine heart to understand, and to chasten thyself before thy God, thy words were heard, and I am come for thy words. But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days: but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I remained there with the kings of Persia.” See, God had heard Daniels prayers on the first day. The angel of God had faced resistance from the enemy. This resulted in the delay of his prayer being answered. I believe we often forget that, when we pray, there’s going to be resistance to that coming to place in our lives. We can get discouraged in thinking that God doesn’t hear us. Sometimes, though, maybe our answer is being delayed for this reason.

AV James 4:7 says, “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” Sometimes we might need to resist the devil right back. Our prayers might have to involve some resistance of our own. God has given us great potential to effect change through our prayers. We just need to remember the impact we can have according to God’s word.

AV Ephesians 6:12 says, “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high [places].”

AV James 5:16 says, “Confess [your] faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.”

AV Daniel 10:12-13 it says, “Then said he unto me, Fear not, Daniel: for from the first day that thou didst set thine heart to understand, and to chasten thyself before thy God, thy words were heard, and I am come for thy words. But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days: but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I remained there with the kings of Persia.”

AV James 4:7 says, “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”

How do we know what’s important to us?

How do we know the things that are important in our lives? And what are the indicators that those things are important to us? Is there only one metric by which to measure these things?

When we look at any of our lives on a 24-hour basis, we can see that we commit set amounts of time to certain tasks and activities. We spend so much time at work, so much time in leisure activities, and so much time sleeping. If we based how much importance we place on an activity only by time spent alone, an unbiased outside observer could easily conclude that our most important activities, and the ones we enjoy the most, are sleep and work. While sleep is important, the amount of time we spend on it is really a reflection of human biological needs and not our own individual importance we place on it. And while work is important, as it allows us to earn a living and provide for our way of life, that’s not necessarily something we are excited about. When you think about it, with those two activities, we spend about two-thirds of our lives on activities that are a result of outside demands placed on us. We have to work and we have to sleep. So, if those aren’t the most important things, how do we know the things that are.

I think most people would place a high priority on their family. If we go by time spent alone, that would be difficult for a lot of us to prove. We could make the case that the reason we spend so much time working is to provide for our family. That’s an important point. That leads into my next point. Which is, I would say that one indicator of what’s important to us is how much we’re willing to sacrifice for that thing. So, you could make a point that you spend time working to sacrifice for your family. Although, there are people that spend so much time working that it has a negative effect on their family relationships. On the whole, though, we are willing to sacrifice for what’s important to us. So, we sacrifice time, money, and personal comfort for our family’s needs.

What’s another thing that would indicate something’s importance in our lives? Well, I would say another indicator would be how much time we spend thinking about that thing. I think it would be difficult to prove something didn’t matter to you if you spent a large amount of time thinking about it. This is especially true for us when we’ve just started a romantic relationship. For some of us, that may be all we think about for a while. And that’s because that has taken on a high level of importance in our lives.

So really, the most important things to us are reflected in the things we are willing to sacrifice for and the things that have prime importance in our minds. It doesn’t come down to just time spent. Even though that’s important, there are other indicators of how much we value something.

…Let’s go deeper

The reason I bring up this topic is because I think a lot of the time we get the mistaken idea that time spent on God-related activities alone is an indicator of God’s importance in our lives. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying don’t spend time with God. Because I’m not saying that. It’s very important we spend time reading the Bible and in prayer. However, the realities of life dictate that we can’t spend all of our time in reading and in prayer. I’ve come to think of it somewhat differently. I’ve come to see that the value of God in my life is shown by involving Him in everything I do. So, everything I do revolves around Him.

AV Romans 12:1 says, “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, [which is] your reasonable service.” I believe our approach to God should be, on a daily basis, to be willing to sacrifice for Him our time and energies in accomplishing the tasks He would have us to do. Sometimes He may direct us to do something. And we just need to be willing to sacrifice, maybe some other things we want, in order to do it.

AV Psalms 1:1-2, “Blessed [is] the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight [is] in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.” Psalms 1:1-2 paints a picture for us of a man whose mind is continuously reflecting on God’s word. It shows that this man is blessed. Why? Because he’s doing those things and it’s keeping him on the right path. Thinking on and doing the Word will naturally cause us to be blessed. The Laws of God will keep us out of trouble and pointed in the right direction.

AV Isaiah 26:3 says, “Thou wilt keep [him] in perfect peace, [whose] mind [is] stayed [on thee]: because he trusteth in thee.” This verse shows us how we can keep our mind on the Lord throughout the day. No matter what tasks we’re doing, or where we’re going we can focus on Him. It says this will keep us in perfect peace. Why? Because we are trusting in Him throughout the day in everything we do. Also there’s AV 1Thessalonians 5:17. It simply says, “Pray without ceasing.” Besides our set daily time in prayer, we can pray to Him throughout the day. In everything we do, we can ask for His guidance or for Him to intervene in the daily events of our lives.

Finally, I think it’s important to have a heavenly mindset. AV Colossians 3:2 says, “Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.” We need to remember that, while we have daily tasks to accomplish, we shouldn’t become encumbered by them. In everything we do our hearts and minds should be set on things above. Not only heaven as our goal, but having a kingdom mindset in that everything we do is done with God’s purposes and plans in mind.

AV Romans 12:1 says, “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, [which is] your reasonable service.”

AV Psalms 1:1-2, “Blessed [is] the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight [is] in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.”

AV Colossians 3:2 says, “Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.”

Wisdom from unexpected places

It’s funny the people you run into and interact with on a daily basis. We sometimes learn things from each other. Even people we don’t even know can have a part in teaching us things about life.

I was in line at a coffee shop the other day. I had just purchased a coffee and was standing there waiting for it. An elderly man came up to me and just asked, out of the blue, “What did you get?” I was kind of taken off guard and it took me a couple seconds to respond. I said, “Uh, I got a mocha latte.” He responded curiously, “That was what, 4 or 5 dollars?” I said, “Yeah, $4.50.” He responded incredulously, “4 dollars?” I said half-assuredly, “Yours was probably a dollar.” He said, “Yeah, this was a dollar. And I still get the same buzz.” Then he walked off in this “case-closed” kind of manner with certainty he had the last word in the matter. This encounter left me standing there, feeling unsatisfied with my over-priced beverage. Of course if he had stayed to talk I don’t think I would have had a solid response.

Anyway, this short encounter made me question some things. I had already made some recent changes to my spending habits. What I had done was basically put myself on a food budget. Not only a budget, but I had decided on a set amount for food each week and then I would take that amount out of my account in cash. The thing that I’ve realized is that you spend less money when you have to spend cash. Just swiping a card is too easy and doesn’t have the same emotional, or mental impact as spending cash. It also gives me a kind of gauge for when I’m getting close to the end of my budget for the week. I can tell when I only have 15 dollars left that I’m getting close to my limit. Of course, I may not always stay under-budget. But as long as I stay close, I’m happy.

So, I was pretty proud of myself and my new-found frugality. This short exchange with this man had kind of knocked me down a bit. I was proud of the changes I had made. Even though I had made a positive change in my spending habits, maybe this was my last vestige of wasteful spending to still be addressed. And I really didn’t buy coffee like this on a daily basis. But, admittedly, there were weeks when I spent more than I should.

I concluded in thinking that maybe that guy had a point. Maybe I needed make a few more adjustments. Maybe what he had said to me was just a confirmation of what I already knew I needed to do. Anyway, I’ve decided to buy my own coffee maker.

I don’t believe he was, even though I do believe that does happen. I do believe, though, that God can send someone into our lives to maybe send us a message or a confirmation. I believe God has a history of doing this. Maybe it’s to get our attention. Examples that come to mind are Moses with the burning bush.

I believe God shows us things sometimes through our dreams as well. Joseph dreamed a dream in Genesis 37. In AV Genesis 37:6-7 it says, “And he said unto them, Hear, I pray you, this dream which I have dreamed: For, behold, we [were] binding sheaves in the field, and, lo, my sheaf arose, and also stood upright; and, behold, your sheaves stood round about, and made obeisance to my sheaf.” This was a dream given to Joseph that gave him knowledge about his future. Of course his brothers weren’t too impressed. But it was useful for Joseph to know this.

Later in Genesis 41 Joseph doesn’t have a dream, but Pharaoh does. It’s a long series of verses, so I won’t add them all here. But, basically, Joseph’s ability to interpret dreams brings him before the Pharaoh of Egypt. The chief butler of Pharaoh tells him of a Hebrew servant he knew in prison named Joseph who could interpret dreams. Pharaoh calls for Joseph. Joseph interprets the dream for Pharaoh. He tells him of 7 years of plenty and 7 years of famine about to face Egypt. Because Joseph was able to interpret the dream and tell it to him, Pharaoh placed him in charge of the entire kingdom second only to Pharaoh. Not only that, but Joseph had the solution for Pharaoh. So, he allowed Joseph to be in charge so he could implement it.

It’s interesting sometimes the places from where we can gain wisdom. I suppose paying attention is the key. If we are open to receiving a wise word from an unusual place, it can end up making a dynamic impact on our lives.

AV Hebrews 13:2 says, “Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.”

AV Genesis 37:6-7 it says, “And he said unto them, Hear, I pray you, this dream which I have dreamed: For, behold, we [were] binding sheaves in the field, and, lo, my sheaf arose, and also stood upright; and, behold, your sheaves stood round about, and made obeisance to my sheaf.”

Don’t feel like talking right now

Do you ever just feel like not talking? I have that happen to me quite a lot. Right after I wake up seems to be one of those times. Then there are other random times where I’m just not in a talkative mood.

I’ve noticed that when I call other people, whether they’re friends or family, I usually call them when I’m ready to talk. I have something to say, so I take the initiative to talk. I made a call to a family member a couple times last week. They were busy, so they didn’t answer. Then they called me back when they had time. By that time, though, I was no longer ready to talk. So, when they called, I was thinking, “Oh, why did they call right now?” So, I answered, but I didn’t feel like it ended up being a productive conversation. These are the times I usually end up giving a series of one-word responses. I feel kind of bad when I end up doing that. Yet, I can’t really make myself excited to talk either. It’s probably similar to a performer when they have to go on stage. Show time comes and they have to be ready to deliver, whether they’re ready or not.

Then there are times when I call someone to stay in touch, and I think they’re not really in a talkative mood either. So, finding a time when we are both wanting to talk can be a challenge. I think it’s sometimes difficult to stay in touch, for this reason. People are not only busy, but even if they’re not, you may end up calling them during they’re wind down time. They may be in a sort of vegetative state in front of the TV. You can usually tell you don’t have their full attention because some of their responses don’t really match what you’re saying. If you’re telling them about some tragic event you saw on the news and they say, “Oh, that’s cool”, you probably don’t have their full attention. Or, it’s possible they have a dark sense of humor. But I would venture to guess they’re just not listening.

So, finding that time where both parties feel like talking can be difficult. Kind of like winning the lottery. This can make it difficult to stay in contact with others. It’s important we make the effort, though. Communication is a key element in our personal relationships. It doesn’t just happen. It takes effort. I think it’s easy to forget that it’s worth the effort. I’m learning that I may have to take the initiative sometime even when I don’t feel like it. I might have to make a mental list of things to talk about. Asking the right questions can be a good conversation starter. There’s no set formula, but you’ve got to start somewhere. Oh, and making sure I’m listening is probably a good idea too.

…Let’s go deeper

When I think of my own unwillingness to talk, I think about how God is always willing to talk to us. And God speaks to us in different ways. Sometimes God speaks directly to us by speaking to our hearts.
cat-98359_1280
In AV Isaiah 65:24 it says, “And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear.” God is readily available to hear us when we speak to him. He’s never too busy. We can call on him at any time. I believe this verse show his readiness to speak to us. It says, “before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear.”

Another way God speaks to us is through His word. AV 2 Timothy 3:16 says, “All scripture [is] given by inspiration of God, and [is] profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:” We know that what God speaks to us will be in line with what His word says. His word speaks to us in different ways. Some things are meant to correct us when we get off track and get us headed in the right direction. Other times they are meant for instructing us on how to live, how to approach a situation, or answers to question we have.

Sometimes God will speak to us through other people. Many time in the Bible God spoke to His people through prophets. In AV Acts 21:10-11 it says, “And as we tarried [there] many days, there came down from Judaea a certain prophet, named Agabus. And when he was come unto us, he took Paul’s girdle, and bound his own hands and feet, and said, Thus saith the Holy Ghost, So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man that owneth this girdle, and shall deliver [him] into the hands of the Gentiles.” This was a warning to Paul the things he would suffer for the sake of the Gospel in Jerusalem.

Sometimes God will use a circumstance to direct us. AV Proverbs 16:9 it says, “A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps.” I think of this in terms of how we often go about our plans we have, but sometimes God can direct us in a different direction through an open door, or a closed door. Sometimes we may not be sure what He’s directing us to do. These can be things He sometimes uses to guide us in the right direction.

It’s always comforting to know that God is speaking to us. He has a number of different ways He speaks. I guess we just need to be sure we’re listening.

AV Isaiah 65:24 it says, “And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear.”

AV 2 Timothy 3:16 says, “All scripture [is] given by inspiration of God, and [is] profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:”

AV Acts 21:10-11 it says, “And as we tarried [there] many days, there came down from Judaea a certain prophet, named Agabus. And when he was come unto us, he took Paul’s girdle, and bound his own hands and feet, and said, Thus saith the Holy Ghost, So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man that owneth this girdle, and shall deliver [him] into the hands of the Gentiles.”

AV Proverbs 16:9 it says, “A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps.”

Credentials or Competence

What is the more important quality to determine someone’s success? I’ve thought about this, in particular, regarding a person’s job or career. There are people who have all the right degrees and qualifications, but when it comes down to crunch time they’re just not very dependable, or competent. Others may not have the degrees required, but you can find that they are otherwise competent and reliable.

I had a boss who seemed to place a lot of importance on applicants having all the right credentials and experience for the position they were applying. Some of his hires, I would say, ended up being not that impressive, when they were hired on that basis alone. There are a lot of things to consider when hiring someone. Some people who have all the right degrees can easily take the job for granted. Therefore, they don’t appreciate what they have. So, they approach the job with the attitude, “You’re just so lucky to have me here.” These are the type of people who show up when they feel like it. They might end up calling in a lot to say they aren’t coming in that day. Or, they might not call in at all.

There’s also the factor to consider of them just being a capable person. I’ve seen some very intelligent people with all the right degrees, but as the saying goes, “They could mess up a one man parade.” This is sometimes hard to watch. You can watch some people work and it seems they just leave a trail of disaster behind them. And it can be more work just fixing everything that gets messed up than if you had never hired them at all.

A less credentialed person can sometimes be the right hire for many reasons. They might appreciate the job more. So, they don’t take things for granted. They pay more attention to what they’re doing. They approach the job with a fresh mindset, so they don’t have any pre-conceived notions. They also don’t have any bad habits that you need to un-train from a previous job they had. They’re a blank slate you can work with and teach them what you want them to learn, the way you want them to learn it. To hire these people you may have to rely more on references and talking to previous employers.

Of course, some people are neither credentialed nor competent. I suppose those would definitely be a no hire. And other people are both. In which case, you might end up getting a really good employee. The bottom line for me, is that if I had to choose between the two, I would choose the competent person. I would say that credentials and degrees have often become overvalued in our society. I’m not trying to denigrate people with credentials. I’m just saying that, in my experience, if I had to choose between the two, competence is the better way to go. You can get a long way in life just by being a competent and dependable person.

…Let’s go deeper

It’s often been said that God doesn’t call the equipped, He equips the called. I think there’s a lot of truth to that, and it’s evidenced by scripture. There are many examples where God used some of the least expected candidates. I think King David was one example. Of all the sons of Jesse, he was the one people least expected to become King of Israel.
man-540500_1280
The prophet Jeremiah was another example because he thought he was too young. He said in AV Jeremiah 1:6, “Then said I, Ah, Lord GOD! behold, I cannot speak: for I [am] a child.” He didn’t think he was qualified. But God answered in AV Jeremiah 1:7: “But the LORD said unto me, Say not, I [am] a child: for thou shalt go to all that I shall send thee, and whatsoever I command thee thou shalt speak.” God doesn’t care whether you meet the qualifications of people. He has His own set of qualifications. He knows the hearts of all men. He knows whether they’ll be faithful to what He’s called them to do.

AV 1 Corinthians 1:27 says, “But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;” This is true often not only of things, but of people God uses. But what does this verse mean, you may wonder? Well, when God speaks about the ‘foolish things of the world’, He’s saying they may look foolish to the people of the world. And when He speaks about the ‘week things of the world’, He’s saying that they may look weak in the eyes of the world. But God has placed a high value on them. They’re not foolish to Him. He knows their true value. These are often the people who aren’t puffed up with pride, but have a humbleness of heart that God is looking for.

We are made credible because of Him. We are qualified because of Him. Not due to some earthly mandate we have to back us.

AV 2 Corinthians 12:9, “And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.” This was God’s response to Paul when He asked God to take away His ‘thorn in the flesh.’ Why did God say this? Well, because this infirmity got Paul completely out of the way so that God could work through Him. God’s strength is made perfect in our weakness. Why? Because then we’re out of the way. Our ego, our pride, our self-sufficiency doesn’t get in the way. And God can work through us more effectively.

What’s the end result of all this then? AV 1 Corinthians 1:29 says, “That no flesh should glory in his presence.” This ends up showing us that He is the one to be glorified. If God were to use only the qualified and wise, in this world, people could easily attribute their success to those people themselves. But when God uses the least, in the eyes of the world, they can only end up concluding that it was a work of God.

You may feel God calling you to do something you don’t feel qualified to do. This can make you reluctant to step out and do it. But know this—if He’s called you to do it, He will equip you to do it.

AV Jeremiah 1:6-7, “Then said I, Ah, Lord GOD! behold, I cannot speak: for I [am] a child. But the LORD said unto me, Say not, I [am] a child: for thou shalt go to all that I shall send thee, and whatsoever I command thee thou shalt speak.”
