The Power of Choice

Have you ever thought about how important free choice is? Well, we have a lot of them to make every day. Some minor. Some major. But choice isn’t something we should take for granted.

Often, in this country, we can begin to take for granted the free choices we have. We grew up in them, so we don’t really know any different. But if you look throughout the world, and history, a country founded on the basis of freedom of choice is a fairly rare thing. It’s mostly been monarchies and dictatorships, where you had freedom up to the point they allowed it. Which, in reality, isn’t free choice. Our freedoms, here, are defined by a document and not a specific person. We have the rule of law to govern our individual actions. Most leaders, given the opportunity, will choose to exercise control over its people. This is not only a response to a desire for more power, but also an arrogant belief that they know what is best for the people. But even if they do actually know what’s best, they aren’t respecting the rights of the individual. People can’t learn to make the right choices unless the option is given. Wouldn’t you rather people did what was right because they learned to do so, rather than doing what was right because they had to? Because then, people not only know what is right, but the reasons for it being right. The practical application of knowledge is the definition of wisdom. Wouldn’t you prefer someone acting noble out of conviction rather than compulsion? It’s easier to trust a person’s heart that has learned the value of right living rather than a person that has had it forced upon them.

Choice is important because choices are followed by actions and actions are what define our lives. And this is the power we have in our lives. The effect we have has its genesis in our choices. Really, our choices are infinite, but the right choices we can make are finite. There’s a narrow range of choices within the confines of what is right. We have the opportunity to make a lot of wrong choices. But finding the ones that are right is a valuable thing. Because this is truth. Truth is by definition exclusive. And its exclusivity shows its value.

True freedom isn’t freedom to do whatever we want, but freedom to do what we ought. I think here is a good test of our character. If given a position of absolute power, and there were no negative consequences for our actions, would we still make the choices we know to be right? Would we make the right choices simply because they are right? It’s a tough question to ask. But I think it’s a valuable and important one.

But we still come down to the question of, ‘Why is making right choices so important?’ Well, even if you aren’t convinced that right choices matter on any other grounds, there’s this one thing: Better choices produce better outcomes. If we want to have positive outcomes in our lives, we need to make positive choices. Living our lives in line with the natural laws that govern it is the most practical and common sense thing we can do. That’s wisdom—the practical application of knowledge.

The evidence of our choice is represented by the results produced in our lives. We will see a good result when make good choices. Something we easily miss sometimes.

AV Proverbs 14:12: “There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof [are] the ways of death.” This is the problem we face. Sometimes we think we have an idea of what we think is the right way of living. But we’re going by what seems right and not what is right. That’s why we can’t go by our own thinking. We have to go by what God has said and what He’s said to us in His word.

AV Galatians 6:7: “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.” The reality we often miss is that we reap the results of our actions. Sometimes it may seem that somebody gets away with something. But we can be assured that’s not the case. We reap good things from the good that we do and we reap negative results from the wrong that we do as well.

AV 1 John 1:9: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us [our] sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” The good news is, that when we do make some wrong choices, God is faithful and just to forgive us when we confess it to Him. This is the assurance we have. Knowing that when we have done something wrong we can start on a new and right path is a great comfort to us.

AV Matthew 7:13: “Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide [is] the gate, and broad [is] the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:” The strait gate is the narrow path. It’s narrow because the truth is narrow. There is only one truth. The broad path is broad because there are so many falsehoods. There are many false ways to choose from. But the truth is given to us through His word. When we follow that we are following the straight and narrow path that leads to life.

AV Joshua 24:15: “And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that [were] on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” The last part of this verse shows us the choice Joshua made. He was determined to choose the right way. He chose to serve the Lord. That’s the way of truth. And God is inviting us all to make that right choice as well.

AV Proverbs 14:12: “There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof [are] the ways of death.”

AV Galatians 6:7: “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.”

AV 1 John: 1:9: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us [our] sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

AV Matthew 7:13: “Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide [is] the gate, and broad [is] the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:”

AV Joshua 24:15: “And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that [were] on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”

Live in the now

This is a message for me. I don’t know if anyone else ever has this problem. But I tend to think ahead a lot. It’s a problem inherent to my personality, although I’ve made progress and have gotten better at it.

There are a number of problems that come with not living in the present. For one thing, you’re robbing yourself of the present. When you think about it, the only time you really possess is right now. So, if you are spending your time right now on the future, you kind of end up with neither. And that’s unfortunate when we do that. Time is a precious commodity. And we often rob ourselves of it without realizing it. We should not only make the best use of it, but enjoy it as well. And that’s another great thing about ‘living in the now’. Having a conscious awareness of right now and living in the now helps make life enjoyable.

Do you know what else living in the now will help you with? It will help you to slow down and not be in such a rush. Often times, when we are thinking too much into the future we end up rushing more. And I think the more we are thinking in the future, the more we rush. Often times we are thinking of all the things we have to get done, and the more things that come to mind, the more we rush. Much of this is based on fear. It seems we end up trying to chase down the future. If you’ve ever seen a dog chasing his tail, you get the picture. He never catches it, though, does he? It’s the same way with us. We end up chasing down what we can’t grasp instead of grasping and holding onto what we can—this present time.

If you think about the power we have. The only power we have to effect change in our lives, and in the lives of others, is right now. That’s why ‘Now’ is such a powerful time. So, in order for us to be the most effective, and productive, we need to put our energies into ‘Now’. We can’t gain any traction if our focus is on the past, or too much on the future. We will be continually diminishing our effectiveness when we take our focus off of ‘Now’.

All of this is said, not meaning to diminish the importance of planning long-term. But it’s when we are in a rush that we start to lose our focus. Thinking on the importance and power of ‘Now’ can be one of the most important things we can do to help us live a powerful and effective life. The great thing is that life is so much more enjoyable that way. You’re not wasting time and energy worrying about the future. Your energies are being spent where they have the most effect—right now.

When you think about Jesus and his time here on this earth, He didn’t seem to spend a lot of time on the future. He was living in the now. He made the most of His present time. And Jesus was the most effective person who ever lived.

AV Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” These two verses—if we will just remember these—will solve a lot of problems in our lives. Much or our problem and struggle comes when we aren’t trusting in the Lord with all our hearts, when we are leaning to our own understanding, and aren’t acknowledging Him in all our ways. But if we do the things in these verses, we can live in the present because we are trusting Him with our future. We are able to live in the now because we understand that He holds our future. He directs our paths in the now when we hand our future over to Him.

AV Psalms 118:24: “This [is] the day [which] the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.” It’s interesting that this says ‘This is the day’. We wake up every day rejoicing in this day. I believe that this is partly a message for us to, not only be thankful for each day, but to grab a hold of each day, and live each day to the full in Him.

AV Hebrews 11:1: “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Faith in God has its power in the present and the now. For we possess now, by faith, that which we believe to see manifest in our lives. We may be believing for a future date. But we are believing in the ‘Now’. That’s our substance, our evidence—the faith we have now.

AV Mark 9:23: “Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things [are] possible to him that believeth.” The possibilities Jesus presents for us in this verse are amazing. The limits are according to what we can believe for from Him. I believe God wants us to believe Him for great and mighty things. And I believe these things become possible as we are fully believing and living our lives in the ‘Now’.

AV Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”

AV Psalms 118:24: “This [is] the day [which] the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.”

AV Hebrews 11:1: “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”

AV Mark 9:23: “Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things [are] possible to him that believeth.”

There’s a great devotional by Sarah Young called ‘Jesus Calling’. Her writing is written from the perspective of Jesus talking directly to you. But I felt compelled to include one of her devotionals on this topic. This is one she wrote on excessive planning.

“You will not find My Peace by engaging in excessive planning: attempting to control what will happen to you in the future. That is a commonly practiced form of unbelief. When your mind spins with multiple plans, Peace may sometimes seem to be within your grasp; yet it always eludes you. Just when you think you have prepared for all possibilities, something unexpected pops up and throws things into confusion. I did not design the human mind to figure out the future. That is beyond your capability. I crafted your mind for continual communication with Me. Bring Me all your needs, your hopes and fears. Commit everything into My care. Turn from the path of planning to the path of Peace.” Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. —1 Peter 5:6–7 In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps. —Proverbs 16:9 Commit your way to the Lord, Trust also in Him, And He shall bring it to pass. —Psalm 37:5 nkjv

Do what you can’t do

What limits do we sometimes place on ourselves? Can we sometimes do more than we think we can? We sometimes underestimate what we can do. And that’s easy to do. But we should be encouraged in that we can often do much more.

I think the reason I’m writing on this topic is that there have been many times in the past where I didn’t believe I was capable of something. But when I pushed through and did it, then I found out that I could. The barriers I had created in my mind had come down. So, why do we sometimes allow these barriers to overwhelm us? I suppose there are a number of reasons. But if we are able to overcome these reasons, then they aren’t very good ones, are they? Maybe, sometimes we need to really examine what’s holding us back from doing what we know we should do. I would venture to guess that if we really looked at what was holding us back, we would see how small and ridiculous a barrier it is.

I mean, what really keeps me from reaching out to someone and maybe start a relationship, or friendship with them? There may be a fear there. But what is that fear based on? Is there really any significant downside. Even if someone isn’t interested in getting to know you, they will usually send you signals without saying it outright. And we shouldn’t take it personally. Sometimes certain personalities just don’t mesh well. And it’s not either person’s fault. There’s just not a connection there.

If I relate this to actual physical things, I often think about when I was in wrestling in High School. If you aren’t familiar with wrestling, you probably don’t know the conditioning involved in training to get into shape for it. It’s arguably the most physically demanding sport there is. If you attended a wrestling practice you would understand what I mean. Some of the drills are designed to tax your body so that it gets used to the constant struggle against another human being. And a lot of it comes down to conditioning. If you are able to be conditioned better than your opponent, you have a big advantage. But what I found in the process of getting in shape was that I was capable of so much more than I thought. The coaches will push you past these limits you have set up in your mind. And what you find is that these limits aren’t often physical, but mental. Saying, and believing, that you can’t sets up that barrier in your mind. But when you take down these barriers in your mind and allow yourself to reach for something more, you often surprise yourself. And having someone there beside you to help nudge you along can help us across the finish line.

This is where we need to take down these barriers in our minds. We need to realize these barriers are self-imposed. We need to allow ourselves to do the things we can’t do.

…Let’s go deeper

We can take this further, though. There are also things we think we can’t do. And we’re right, in the sense that we can’t do in the natural, and in our own strength. But often God will give us something that we think we can’t do. But we need to step out believing that He will give us the strength to do it. This not only creates a proper dependence on Him, but also stretches our faith.

AV Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” The reality we need to face when doing what God wants us to do, is that He will give us the strength to do it. We often get into trouble when we think we have to do something in our own strength. But relying on His strength is the key. This is also freeing. For when we do that, we are now free to just do what He has called us to do. We don’t have to worry about our own abilities or strength now. Because if He asks us to do it, He will give us the strength to do it.

AV Zechariah 4:6: “Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This [is] the word of the LORD unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts.” Our might and power are often overrated. But the Spirit of God makes up for our shortcomings. Often we are despondent over our own lack of ability or strength. We feel wholly inadequate. But God encourages us by letting us know that the power of His Spirit will be the means for completing the task.

AV Exodus 14:14: “The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.” Many times we need to do something for God to act on our behalf. But sometimes God will show us that we don’t have to do anything but trust Him. All we need to do is stand back and watch Him fight for us.

AV John 15:7: “If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.” Sometimes we miss this key. Jesus tells us that our abiding in Him, and His word abiding in us, opens our lives to His provision and help in our lives. For when we are abiding in Him, we are tapped into the source. Our faith tapped into Him and His word will allow Him to do amazing things in our lives.

AV Jeremiah 33:3: “Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.” I believe God wants to show us many things. I believe God wants to reveal Himself in our lives. And I believe that He wants to show us great and mighty things. He not only will help us to do what we can’t do, but also to know what we don’t know. We just need to open ourselves to these things. And if we seek Him He will reveal these things to us. The things that we couldn’t otherwise know.

AV Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.”

Living the clean life

I believe most of us today have a desire to live a clean life. I think we often have that desire, but at the same time there are so many things working against that in our lives today. The culture we live in often runs contrary to the basics of living a clean life.

Desiring to live a clean life is something that is not only challenging in the moral sense, but also in the literal sense. Applying that to our physical bodies is a challenge as well. But anything worth doing usually is a challenge, right? We usually want to eat right and exercise. But the prevalence of fast food restaurants, junk food, and the challenge of finding time for exercise all fly in the face of that. These are the challenges and problems we face in living the clean life.

So, what are the advantages of living a clean life? Well, let’s apply this in the area easiest to understand. When we think about the things we take into our bodies, we all know that those things have an effect on us, for good or for bad. The Haagen Dazs and burgers and fries are going to eventually take their toll when done on a consistent basis. These things eventually lead us to a host of all kinds of health problems. However, when we switch that around, getting a diet of consistent greens and fruits and vegetables bring us to a healthier state. Just like the saying goes, “Garbage In, Garbage Out”. So, the flip must be true—if we put good things in, we get good things out.

So, let’s take this a little further. Applying the same principle to the things with which we fill our minds, we know that those things have an effect on us as well. Some of the movies that are out there to watch are questionable, at best. Others—well, they’re not even questionable. And many times we may want to watch something because the topic is interesting to us. But the way in which the film makers chose to present it was less than kosher. That’s unfortunate. They had a choice to make in how they presented something. They could have just as easily presented it in a clean manner for everyone to enjoy. But instead, they chose to include vulgarities, crude humor, and other images that limit their viewing audience. But regardless of the choices they made, we can still make a choice of our own. We can make the choice not to subject ourselves to those things. We can choose a higher life.

The reality is, that those negative things we watch and listen to, have an effect on us. They impact our thoughts and hearts in ways we don’t even fully realize. When we continually lower our standard pretty soon we don’t know what our standard is anymore. We become normalized. We allow the culture to affect us in negative ways. So, if we really want a life producing good things, then we need to fill our hearts and minds with good things.

…Let’s go deeper

Of course, the Bible gives us much direction in the area of living a clean life. But what God is focused on is the condition of our hearts, and not just outward action. It should be a pure heart producing good results.

AV Hebrews 12:14: “Follow peace with all [men], and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:” God’s concern is for us to pursue holiness. We often emphasize grace, but forget that we are called to live a holy life. And it’s true that God is gracious to forgive us. But once forgiven, we need to pursue ways of righteousness. And we need to pursue God’s ways of righteousness, and not our own.

AV Matthew 15:11: “Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man.” Jesus was making a statement here about our heart condition. Jesus was responding here to the Pharisees and their concern over keeping the commandments of men. They thought that an outward keeping of the law was enough. What Jesus explains for us here is that those things that we take in physically don’t affect the condition of our hearts. While they may negatively impact our bodies, they don’t have a spiritual significance. It’s those dark things that we keep hidden in our hearts that impact us in negative ways.

AV Romans 10:3: “For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.” There’s a way in which we can walk where we are living a truly righteous life. But we are not living in righteousness of ourselves, but through God. This way is done through the Holy Spirit. Once we are saved, we have all we need to live a righteous and clean life. God places in us a new heart. Now we go according to this and not our old ways.

AV Galatians 5:16: “[This] I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.” Walking in the Spirit first requires a consciousness and awareness of this new heart we have. And God will lead us by His Spirit through our heart now made alive to Him. This is how we are able to live a clean life. See, when we do this we will not fulfill our fleshly desires. We cannot. It’s impossible. God’s Spirit will not lead us to sin. It’s when we start allowing our flesh to take over that we get into trouble. But as we start to practice walking in the Spirit, it becomes easier, and we learn how to let this new way of walking to dominate our lives.

AV Romans 10:4: “For Christ [is] the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.” What does this mean? Well, God doesn’t want us to just follow a bunch of rules anymore. He wants us to not just appear right, but to be right. That means because of what Jesus did on the Cross, we are now free to follow Him. It’s an acknowledgement that we can’t be righteous outside of Him. It’s Him and Him living inside of us that allows us to truly live the clean life.

AV Hebrews 12:14: “Follow peace with all [men], and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:”

AV Matthew 15:11: “Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man.”

AV Romans 10:3: “For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.”

AV Galatians 5:16: “[This] I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.”

AV Romans 10:4: “For Christ [is] the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.”

Keep looking for the answer

Do you need an answer to a problem? We all seem to have times where we have a problem and the answer seems to elude us. And many times it just takes persistence to find the answer we’re looking for.

On many occasions I have needed answers to my own problems. And they didn’t often just magically appear. I had to do some legwork to find the answer I needed to the problem.

Sometimes I had to ask people I respect for advice. We may have difficulty in knowing how to handle a situation. We may have trouble with a relationship. This is when the advice of a friend or a parent can be helpful. Sometimes we may even need to seek a professional counselor. They can sometimes help us to sort out the issue and get to the root cause. The reason we sometimes need outside help is because we can run into some complex problems. They may require a solution that may not be apparent to us at first. This is why getting an outside perspective can be helpful. Others can see things from a fresh view. And they may see things that we sometimes don’t. And this can be especially true in relationships. When we are the ones in the relationship having problems, we lose objectivity. The reason is because we are so emotionally involved in it. And emotions can easily cloud our judgement. So, we shouldn’t be afraid to ask for wise counsel.

Sometimes tenacity is the key. We just haven’t found the correct answer because we haven’t looked hard enough. Think about it this way. Every problem in the world has a solution. It’s just a matter of finding it. There are answers to every problem we face. If no one knows the answer, it just means that no one has found it yet. Many inventors discovered this reality through much pain and toil. They were looking for a way to solve a problem. And it took a lot of trial and error before they found the right answer. But the ones who stuck with it eventually found the answer they were looking for. That’s why we shouldn’t give up when looking for an answer. We may even be really close to finding it and not realize it. That’s why persistence is important.

I guess the real question is, “How bad do you want to know the answer?” Some things we just want to know out of curiosity. In those instances, the answer probably isn’t that important. But then there are times when we badly need an answer to our problem. Maybe it’s a health problem, a finance problem, or a relationship problem. This is when we need to make a quality decision that we are going to find a solution. Many times our persistence will pay off if we don’t give up. Don’t go by what you see. Just go with the knowledge that there is an answer out there.

…Let’s go deeper

First and foremost, finding the answer to our problems should involve us seeking God. We need to involve Him in our daily decision-making. Because He knows it all. We don’t. That’s the great comfort—that we can ask Him for answers when we don’t know.

AV Proverbs 8:17: “I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me.” God appreciates those that seek Him. But what does it mean to seek Him early? Well, what God really wants is for us to seek Him first. We need to train ourselves to make our first reaction to ask Him when we run into difficulty. When we make this our first reaction, we are setting ourselves up for success.

AV Galatians 6:9: “And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.” Being discouraged when we don’t see results from our searching can become an easy thing to do. We have to continually remind ourselves that when we continue to seek Him, He will respond to us. He’s not trying to make things difficult for us. But He wants to foster a dependence on Him. And that dependence is the key to our success. Otherwise, we will start to depend on ourselves and end up in a mess. But that dependence partly happens by us continually seeking Him.

We need to keep knocking until He reveals the answer to us.

AV Psalms 119:2: “Blessed [are] they that keep his testimonies, [and that] seek him with the whole heart.” Notice that keeping His testimonies goes hand-in-hand with seeking Him. We are blessed when we keep His testimonies and seek Him with the whole heart. God wants an obedient and willing heart. If we’re holding back part of our heart, we need to let go of it. We need to release and yield it to Him.

AV Isaiah 59:2: “But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid [his] face from you, that he will not hear.” This goes along with verse Psalms 119:2,but goes further. Sometimes we can have unrepented sin in our lives. This can keep us from receiving from Him, or receiving the answer we want from Him. That’s when we need to examine our hearts, and also ask Him to show us anything in our hearts that isn’t right. Then we can confess it to Him. This opens the communication lines again. So, now He will hear us and we can freely receive from Him.

AV Proverbs 8:17: “I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me.”

AV Galatians 6:9: “And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.”

AV Matthew 7:7: “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:”

AV Psalms 119:2: “Blessed [are] they that keep his testimonies, [and that] seek him with the whole heart.”

AV Isaiah 59:2: “But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid [his] face from you, that he will not hear.”

Don’t let experience dictate your beliefs

I often think about the things I believe and why I believe them. We all have some kind of belief system. Even if it’s a decision not to have any beliefs. That’s still a belief system. And these things govern our worldview.

The aspect of our beliefs that is interesting to me is in examining the origination of those beliefs. Because we all have beliefs, but we don’t often examine where we got that belief. I’m not just talking about religious beliefs either. We have things we have come to believe about morality, finances, emotions, etc. What I wonder is, “How many of those beliefs and belief systems stand up under scrutiny?” For many of us, we may not know, because they’ve never had to stand up under scrutiny. Those beliefs have never been challenged.

Let me put this in a context we all can understand. When we think about some commonly held beliefs that have been proven wrong, we can just look at some examples in history. There was a point in history where it was widely believed that the Earth is the center of the Universe. This appeared to be correct through experience. And many scientists believed this to be true. This belief was developed in the 4th century B.C. However, in the 16th century this belief was proved to be wrong by Copernicus, Galileo, and Kepler. They discovered that the planet, including Earth, actually orbit the Sun. So, up until that time many people had a false belief system on this. It just seemed like it was right, based on experience.

I agree, the above example provides a rather broad look into false beliefs. But what about some of the things we falsely believe individually, every day? Some of us have had bad experiences with certain types of people. Say, for instance, you have a couple bad experiences with two different Wal-Mart cashiers. These experiences really rubbed you the wrong way and stuck in your mind. So, now you come to conclude that all Wal-Mart cashiers are unpleasant. But is that true? Of course not. We know that some Wal-Mart cashiers can be pleasant. But it’s something we come to believe because the power of those experiences overrides what we know to be true.

Taking this further—without realizing it, many of our beliefs that govern our worldview can come from our early family experiences. We can come to false conclusions about people we don’t know based on the experiences we’ve had with the people we do know. We could have had bad experiences with certain family members. We may have had trouble connecting with our mother, harsh relationships with siblings, or a bad relationship with our father. We can easily carry these experiences throughout our lives and allow them to affect how we interact with others. But we can’t allow these experiences to dictate how we see people for the rest of our lives. We need to realize that those were just experiences. They weren’t necessarily true of everyone.

…Let’s go deeper

I believe many people come to the wrong conclusions about God based on their experiences with people. We have been disappointed by people. So, we believe that God is the same way. But we should start from the belief that God is good.

AV Numbers 23:19: “God [is] not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do [it]? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?” Although we have had experiences with people lying to us in the past, we shouldn’t ascribe that quality to God. We need to know that God is faithful and that He is faithful to watch over His promises to us. This is the confidence we have in God.

AV Psalms 34:8: “O taste and see that the LORD [is] good: blessed [is] the man [that] trusteth in him.” God wants us to give Him the opportunity to prove His goodness to us. I believe we so often underestimate the goodness of God. We’ve allowed our past experiences to taint our view of Him and who He is. Past experiences can be good when they confirm that which is true. But when they are contradicting the truth, we need to challenge them.

AV 1 Thessalonians 5:21: “Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.” The Bible even tells us to challenge things we believe. We don’t need to have a blind faith. We have reasons to believe what we believe. This should also give us confidence in what we believe. Then once we learn and know that which is true we need to hold on to it. We need to have a strong grasp of the truth and then not let go of it. Hold on to it with all you’ve got. Because the truth is one of the most important things. When we know the truth it makes us free.

AV 2 Timothy 3:16-17: “All scripture [is] given by inspiration of God, and [is] profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.” The Bible declares its own truth about itself. When we align our lives with its truth, we are changed and transformed in ways of righteousness and equipped for good works. And that’s the power of not allowing our experiences to dictate our theology, but allowing our theology to dictate our experience.

AV Numbers 23:19: “God [is] not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do [it]? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?”

AV Psalms 34:8: “O taste and see that the LORD [is] good: blessed [is] the man [that] trusteth in him.”

AV 1 Thessalonians 5:21: “Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.”

AV 2 Timothy 3:16-17: “All scripture [is] given by inspiration of God, and [is] profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.”

The power of submission

At first glance, a place of submission seems like a position of weakness. But maybe we haven’t properly understood this term. Maybe there’s more to this term that needs to be examined.

I think there’s often a misconception when it comes to the term of submission. And I think that we are quick to think of this in terms of a wife submitting to her husband in marriage. But this idea has a much broader scope than just marriage. Because each of us are under the authority of someone. And submitting to their authority in some area of our lives is required for us to be successful. Some of the first thoughts that come to mind on this are that submissive people are weak, indecisive, powerless, etc. What we are quick to dismiss, though, are the advantages that submission gives us. We misunderstand submission when we wrongly perceive the downside and overlook the upside.

When you are submitting to someone’s authority you are recognizing your own limits. You are willing to allow others to help you in areas where you are weak, instead of going it alone. So, submission begins with an admission of your own limits. That’s partly why submitting is so difficult for so many of us. We don’t like to recognize our limits. But we have to, in order to achieve a level of success in anything. A student submits to a teacher, an employee submits to their boss, an athlete submits to their coach, etc. And no person is good at everything. That’s why a successful person needs to surround themselves with people who are strong in those areas where they are not. And they need to trust the person in authority over them to lead and direct them.

Submission is also a recognition of your role. When we submit we are recognizing our position in the big picture. And that is truly a place of power. Because that is where we will be the most effective. If we start to take on our role, and then someone else’s role, and then another role—pretty soon we are running into all kinds of problems. And that’s because we are not only losing focus on our role, but taking on more roles than we can handle. That’s called spreading yourself too thin. And that’s often how we easily lose our power and effectiveness.

Much of this runs counter to our normal thinking. For one thing, we don’t usually want to believe it because our pride and fear make us resist submission. But I would say that submitting to the proper authority would actually end up being entirely different than we anticipated. I think we would often discover a peace and settledness, and a power in the submission when we fully commit to it. We need to just stop bucking. Stop resisting the authority we are under. We’re resisting the very thing that would help us become as effective as possible.

…Let’s go deeper

The place where we are fully submitted to Christ is the place where God can fully use us. But this submission to God really gives us power in every area of our lives. Submitting to God not only allows Him to use us but gives us power when we need it.

AV James 4:7: “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” Our power in resisting temptation and the enemy starts in our submission to God. If you’ll notice, it doesn’t say to just resist the devil. It starts by saying we have to submit to God. That’s because our power in anything begins with us submitting to God and His authority. We can’t do anything without Him. When we recognize that, we are in a good starting place.

AV 1 Peter 5:6: “Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:” There’s also power in humility. God sees and recognizes a humble heart. A humble heart, not only sees their shortcomings, but also that they don’t have everything figured out. True humility can be difficult. But God will even help us with this if we ask Him to. He will help us to recognize our pride as we get closer to Him. And recognizing it is half the battle. But when we do recognize it and submit to God, we will eventually see ourselves going to a higher place. And even if it’s not higher in an earthly sense, we will go higher in Him.

It’s not really seen as a verse on submission. However, I believe it applies. Even though we may not recognize it, sometimes we are unwittingly submitting ourselves to fear. We are submitting ourselves to fear when we give in to fear and allow it to move us. And the reality is, when we do that, we’re not submitting ourselves to God. So, we need to make sure we’re not submitting ourselves to the authority of something else without realizing it.

AV Proverbs 16:9: “A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps.” Even though we make plans and go about our day with goals in mind, the main thing is that those plans are still submitted to God’s authority. Our plans our subject to change. We allow that those plans can be changed, if God so chooses.

AV 1 Corinthians 6:20: “For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” We often miss the idea that we were bought with a price. Jesus paid it all for us on the cross. There’s only one thing we can give Him in return. The only thing we can give Him in return is our obedience. And that’s when our lives will become truly effective and powerful.

AV James 4:7: “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”

AV 1 Peter 5:6: “Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:”

AV Isaiah 41:10: “Fear thou not; for I [am] with thee: be not dismayed; for I [am] thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.”

AV 1 Corinthians 6:20: “For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.”

Don’t get stressed

I think I’m learning not to get stressed like I used. That’s personal growth for me. I’m getting better at approaching things with a more level-headed mindset. Maybe I’ve learned that getting stressed doesn’t really pay off.

The valuable lessons we learn in life teach us how to handle similar circumstances in the future. I guess that’s why I’m learning not to allow stress to get the better of me. I think I have the advantage of seeing, from past experiences, that getting stressed about it didn’t help. And the situation was always taken care of somehow. But recognizing the source of our stress can help us mitigate its effects.

Sometimes we find we are stressed just because we are trying to take on too much at once. When we find ourselves doing this, we need to just step back and do first things first. What do I really need to handle right now? If I can break things down in to manageable chunks, it’s less overwhelming.

Other times it’s not the number of things facing us, but the enormity of just one thing that we’re facing. That’s when we need to place that big thing in perspective. Making something bigger than it is can be the biggest hindrance to dealing with it. We sometimes need to shrink it down to size. There’s often an answer that we may not be seeing just because we’ve made the problem too big in our minds.

Many things can help us in diminishing our stress levels. When we start feeling the pressures of life, I’ve found exercise can be helpful. Exercise is kind of like a metaphorical stress ball. You know, one of those things people have sitting at their desks when they’re feeling stressed. It’s an outlet for us to let go of aggression or any anxiety.

I think besides knowing how to handle stress, it’s also important that we know what stress is and where it comes from. The thing stress is based on is fear and worry. Because, at the end of the day, the real reason we’re stressed about something is because we’re worried about something. We’re worried that we won’t be able to handle the situation, or the person, or that we won’t find a solution. And when we approach things with that kind of thinking, then it just adds difficulty to the situation—adding stress to stress. These things tend to snowball and get out of hand until we are a big ball of nerves and rendered inert and implacable.

And that’s one of the biggest reason not to get stressed. We are not doing ourselves, or anyone else, any favors in that instance. It’s best to let level heads prevail. But this is just scratching the surface. There’s more to handling stress than just the things mentioned above. There’s a perspective I have yet to mention here. Stress can, not just be managed, but overcome and conquered in our lives.

…Let’s go deeper

Knowing God is with us in times of difficulty is the greatest comfort we can have. God doesn’t want us to be stressed. And while we can do things to help manage our stress, God actually wants to take our stress from us. God has given us a number of great promises regarding our cares and worries.

AV Philippians 4:6: “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.” The great thing is God has given us the privilege to not be careful for anything. He’s given us this privilege through prayer. He wants us to give to Him our worries, concerns and cares. When we do this with a thankful heart, He honors that.

AV 1 Peter 5:7: “Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.” When I think about us ‘casting’ our care upon Him, I think about us allowing Him to carry the load. He’s asking to carry our load for us. So, why are we still carrying it? We can take it to Him through prayer. He is looking for our trust to be so placed in Him, that we fully rely on Him to take care of us. The reason we can have confidence in this is because He cares for us.

AV Psalms 55:22: “Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.” Sometimes we need to be sustained through difficult times. And God will sustain us when we are fully relying on Him. The promise is that we cannot be moved when we trust Him with our cares.

AV Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” Once we have fully let go of our cares. Our next part is to trust Him to lead and direct us. If we need to know what to do, then we need to ask Him and trust that He will tell us what we need to know. Sometimes we are tempted to lean to our own understanding of things. But we need to acknowledge Him in everything we do. When we do that, He will lead us and guide us to where we need to be. And that’s the best way for us not to be stressed.

AV Philippians 4:6: “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.”

I don’t feel like it

Many times we don’t feel like doing things. We come up with excuses for not doing something. And we come up with some really convincing excuses at times. And our culture today seems to have become even more feelings-based.

One of the things we are often compelled to do is just go with how we feel. But where will we end up if we do that? Some of the things we don’t feel like doing are the most important things for us to do. For example, going to work every day is important so we can pay the bills. The reality is, we make the effort and take the time to do the things that are really important to us. So, we do things all the time that we don’t feel like doing. The difference is, we just find good enough reasons to do them.

Some times when we have tasks that we don’t always feel like doing, they require a commitment to undergird our actions. If we make a commitment it can keep us going in the difficult times. For example, there are times when I don’t feel like writing every day. Some that is because I feel I lack something to say. Other time it’s because I just don’t feel up to it. This is where a commitment to the task becomes important.

The reality is, that actions only based on feelings are a pretty shallow way for us to live. When we get our focus off of our feelings the question changes from, “What do I feel like doing?” to, “What do I need to be doing?” When I change my thought process to what I need to be doing, then I’m going to produce better outcomes for my life. We have to make a quality decision about some things in our life. We have to decide the things that are really important to us. And to those things we need to attach our unwavering commitment. The good things we commit ourselves to will, with a day-in and day-out commitment, get us to a destination we can be proud of. If we are unsatisfied with the place are in, then we need to ask ourselves the question, “What are the things I am committed to, regardless of how I feel?” What are the things we are doing with a bull-dogged commitment because we know the outcome is worth the effort?

Very often we are coming up with the wrong answers because we are asking the wrong questions. What I feel like doing is irrelevant. What I need to be doing is the question at hand. Especially today, we need to fight against this feelings-based mindset. Part of the problem we are in as a culture, and as a nation, is rooted in this subtle shift in the public consciousness to legitimize feelings at the expense of our convictions. Unless we recognize this, we will easily fall prey to a thought process that will lead us to a destination we hadn’t anticipated—a destination leaving us empty and void.

…Let’s go deeper

I believe when we have a proper understanding of God’s goodness we naturally become more thankful. And I think that sometimes begins by us looking at what He has created. God and His nature are represented by the things that we can see He has created.

AV Genesis 1:1: “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” This is the beginning verse of the entire Bible. This is where what we understand today had its beginning. It’s remarkable to think of. I wonder what it would have been like to be there at the beginning of all creation. But we naturally know that the things we see started at some point in time.

AV Colossians 1:16: “For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether [they be] thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:” This verse states that not just things we see were created by Him, but all things that we cannot see were also created by Him. There’s not only a physical realm, but also a spiritual realm. God created this as well. And it also says that these things were created for Him and His glory.

AV Romans 1:20: “For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, [even] his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:” God created this world with such an order and complexity that it would obviously point to Him. It’s the order and complexity that points to a creator. It says that these not only point to His existence, but also tell us something of His nature and character as well.

AV 2 Corinthians 9:15: “Thanks [be] unto God for his unspeakable gift.” In this ninth chapter to the Corinthian Church Paul speaks of their liberality in giving and ends with this verse thanking God for His ‘unspeakable gift’. I think Paul wanted to end with mentioning the greatest gift of all—Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross. This is the culmination of all gifts God has given to us. We can not only be thankful for this gift, but also thankful for the gift giver. For the gift reveals to us the heart of the giver.

AV Ephesians 2:10: “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.” But of all of God’s creation, His greatest creation was us. And He expressed His love for us by the death of His son Jesus on the cross. And God not only created everything, but He created a way for us to walk in as well. But we have to choose this way. When we choose the way through the death of His son Jesus Christ we are expressing the highest form of thankfulness for His ‘unspeakable gift’.

AV Ephesians 2:10: “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.”

Share your heart

What’s on your heart? You know what I believe? That’s the most important question when you’re talking to somebody. The thing that is on their heart is the thing they need to talk about the most. And the reverse is also true as well. The thing that’s on your heart is the thing you need to talk about the most.

One thing I’ve found, in writing these posts 5 days a week, is the importance of just sharing what’s on my heart. I don’t always have something profound to say. But I do always have something on my heart. And it’s not that I write about these things because I have everything figured out. The things I write about are the things I feel compelled to say at that moment. I have actually had people give me ideas on things to write about. But I found that when I tried to write about something given to me by someone else that it just didn’t have the impact I wanted. It lacked punch. And it’s not that their idea wasn’t a good one. They were good ideas, but I found it difficult to write on something I wasn’t feeling at the time. I guess that’s why I’ve discovered that it’s just best to say what’s on your heart.

Telling people what’s on our heart is good regardless if it’s a problem we’re dealing with or just a thought, idea, or feeling we want to express. I believe when we have the greatest impact on others and ourselves is when we just purely speak from the heart. There’s something pure and true about it. The heart issues we discuss with others are the ones we truly want to resolve. The heart issues we discuss with others are also the ones that can truly impact their lives.

It seems that often the challenge is opening up about these things. We tend to hold back, especially when we are talking with someone we don’t trust. But even if we do trust them, we can still be hesitant. Yeah, it can be a risk in sharing deep heartfelt things with people. They may not understand you. We may be afraid of them ridiculing us. Although, I don’t honestly think that many people will do that. I would suggest finding someone in your life who you trust. Most of us have somebody with whom we feel we can share the deep things in life. I guess what I’m saying is, even given the risk, it’s a risk worth taking.

Living a meaningful life means talking and dealing with things that have meaning. We don’t know the impact we can have on other people when we speak from the heart. And we don’t know the impact it can have on us. We often underestimate the impact we can have. Just getting honest and real with others is a valuable thing. My own thinking is that most people will appreciate it when you truly open up and share. So, I’ll ask you again, “What’s on your heart?”

…Let’s go deeper

AV Proverbs 4:23: “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it [are] the issues of life.” This verse is clear that the issues of life do truly flow from our hearts. When it says to ‘guard our hearts’ it’s emphasizing the importance of what’s in our hearts. It’s really talking about guarding our hearts from thoughts and ideas that aren’t in line with the truth of God’s word. We need to keep wrong thinking from getting into our hearts. The thoughts we dwell on, if we dwell on them long enough, can drop down into our hearts and then they become a part of our belief system. And that’s where our false belief systems affect our lives, when they come out of our hearts. It’s important that we identify false beliefs, root them out, and replace them with belief systems in line with the truth.

AV James 5:16 Confess [your] faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.” Sometimes sharing our hearts with someone else means we share our faults with them. This means we share with them the things we struggle with. This is not only a humbling experience, but also a healing experience. A move of contrition can also bring healing to our hearts. There’s something about getting things out in the open that helps bring us to a place of healing and lifts a load off of us.

AV 1 Samuel 16:7: “But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for [the LORD seeth] not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.” The importance of the heart and the emphasis God places on it is clear. We often are tempted to look at things from the outside. But God tries and weighs the hearts of all men. He knows our true condition just by looking at our hearts. That’s why expressing our hearts, and heart issues, can’t be overemphasized. These are the things God truly cares about.

God wants us to love Him with the entirety of our being. But it all starts with our hearts.

AV Psalm 55:22: “Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.” While expressing our problems to others can be helpful at times, what we really need to be in the practice of doing is taking these things to God. Really, He is the one that is able handle the things we are dealing with. And what’s great is that He wants us to bring these things to Him. For that is when we are truly being reliant and dependent on Him. And honestly, that’s the best place in which to be.
